    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Full choke start rpms

From the July 1982 Cycle World test of my bike:

"The engine starts immediately on full choke and then goes to about 4500-rpm-and-climbing unless the choke is quickly backed off..."

Until yesterday, my bike always did that. Now it goes to just shy of 3000 rpm and goes no higher. It still starts and runs well, I'm just wondering why this very noticeable change. Any thoughts?
 
You thought you might have a partially clogged exhaust from your other post, right? That would certainly slow the RPM down with or without the choke. Could also be something changed in the choke, like maybe one of the choke fuel feed passages clogged but that would not change the sound of the exhaust. Did you take that muffler apart yet?
 
Didn't unbolt and remove the baffle yet, just sprayed some WD-40 to facilitate it's removal.

I'm thinking maybe this winter it's time for the full carb treatment. Couldn't hurt, and I'll finally be able to operate the choke with just my left thumb.
 
Rob.....I know I will get some flack for posting this, but if its just a matter of freshening up the passages and the jets after some sitting I will start the bike and then remove the tank after its ran a few minutes. Then I will get the gravity bottle and dump in a full can of Berrymans B12 Chemtool..no gas. Then start the bike and let it idle and drink the Berrymans till the bottle is empty. Cleans the floats seats, jets, and all the passages quite effectively. Just my 2 cents.

This is what I use. Compared to Berrymans, Seafoam ( to my experiences ) is a joke.

Must be something wrong with mine then too. Generally I get about 2500 rpm on full choke increasing to twice that at about 2/3 if I leave it there long enough and dropping again to 1500 at about 1/4. Seems to depend on the day exactly what you get.

I just put a bottle of "Ethanol Shield Fuel Stabilizer" (only type local store has) in the tank.

I've been reluctant to touch the carbs because she starts and runs so well. I know they could still look disgusting inside. The only complaint I've ever had with them is the helping hand needed on the carbs to work the choke. And a little bit of what I call 'spitting' (popping?) from the pods.

I hate what they've done to our gasoline.
 
Forget the Stabil "Storage" (red) and get the Marine stuff (blue) - much better product at sucking up water/ethanol mix.
