Fully Faired GS

Anyone here ever attach a full fairing to their GS? I don't mean the vetter types, more along the lines of an early sport bike onto a GS.

I know some of the late 750's and 1150's had full fairings, this is the look I'm thinking about.

If so post up some pics, along with any type of modifications you had to do to mount it up. I may have a lead on an early ninja 600r fairing, and I'm wondering about the feasibility to attach it to my '82 850G.

Problem areas I can think of are the pipes interfering, and the fairing not clearing the front wheel.
Would there also be a problem with heat coming off the engine? I don't wanna overheat my bike

There were a few period correct full fairings available, not sure how many still exist, seeing when the guy takes a tumble, it's the first bit to get written off.
Rickman was a popular one.
The Honda RC1100R fairing looks killer on a GS, if you can find one, Jennifer will get one if I can track one down.

Home made brackets out of flat bar, cost next to nothing to make.
We had a company up the road from me that used to make fiberglass canopies for pick ups and they did knock offs of the RC1100R fairing and tail piece on the side for the guys, were not too expensive either.

No, not really, the main mounting is to steering neck with U bolts and a stay each side to the 6mm bolt in the side of the head, can't remember where I put the very bottom one, I think it was a stay to the lower rear engine mount.

Ohh that does look good in red. I looked up some reproduction fairings, I hadn't thought about that before. Found a few that are interesting looking. The one I really like is a copy of the endurance racer fairings with a 7" round headlight hole. Would look great on my bike

OK who else has a fully faired GS? Including the stock ones for you EF guys

Just a word, most full fairing available now are for vintage race bikes. So be sure you're not buying something meant for racing with clip ons

Most bikes run cooler with a fairing, it help direct the air flow around the motor. I know when I had my SV650 the bike would run on the hotter side naked and would drop about 30*F with the farings on.

This answers your requirements...sort of. It is period correct Rabid Transit by Don Vesco. It was originally mounted on a 1980 GS1100E, it's not a vetter but uses a Vetter mount. I mounted it on my '82 T-model last winter and then removed it this sunner thinking I would do a matched paint job with the spare thank and side covers I have....havene't gotten around to it yet though.

Emjay I'd love an EF bike, but my finances aren't quite in agreement with me there . Since a new bike is out of the question, I'm looking more for modifications to do to my current bike.

SVSooke, I love Old Yeller. Never get tired of seeing that bike. This is the type of sport fairing I'm thinking about.

The Rabid Transit unit is also cool as hell. It will look great once the bike matches it in color. Very Thunderball-esque .

I had a full race-type fairing on a 1980 Honda CB750F years ago. It looked really cool, and it actually gave it a higher top speed, but, it did cause a little heating issue. Not so much on the road, but going through town was brutal on it. I made vents that helped, but using an oil cooler would have been a good thing to consider. You also have to (as mentioned) be very conscious of the handlebars you use with an aftermarket fairing. Most road race full fairings require the use of clip ons otherwise you'll never get full lock from side to side. Airtech makes a nice mount, but they're expensive.

So I decided to play around a bit in photoshop and see what I could do with a fairing from an '86 Ninja 600. Now the image is not to exact scale, and so the mounting locations may be different, but I think it looks awesome just as a 'proof of concept' image. To "scale" the fairing from the ninja pic, and my bike pic, I used the fork diameter as the common dimension. The Ninja had a 38mm, the GS uses 35(37?) but I figured 1-3 mm of slop is probably as accurate as photoshop can get anyways.

I also tried with the full lower fairings, but due to the motor cut outs not matching the GS motor, the mounting points being vastly different, plus trying to clear the pipes, and pegs, I think the full lowers and uppers would be impossible to get mounted. Luckily the fairing is a multipiece unit, and looks pretty good as a half fairing....

Thoughts? Should I go forth and pick up one of these fairings to experiment on in the flesh?

It makes nice lines in profile, but is it wide enough to get around the G's tank?
