    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Funny smell GS1000

My newly restored GS1000 is running great! I did some chop tests and got the carbs dialed in good. But I notice a funny smell coming from the bike. I thought at first I was burning oil, but she doesn't smoke. I thought it might also be my new V&H pipe maybe burning in the packing. After going for a ride today and getting back in my garage, it smelled kind of strong. Like fresh oil, not burned (I just put new oil in it). I sniffed around a bit and it seems to be coming from the crankcase breather, which used to hook to the stock airbox, but now has a crankcase breather filter on it.
Is it normal to smell oil from there? Would routing the hose back under my seat help?
 
Seems inevitable that during a rebuild some oil is going to get on the fins and cases. When the engine gets hot, the oil burns off slowly - so it smells like hot oil. Happened to me. Took maybe 120 miles to go away.

I went to pods and put a K&N crankcase breather filter on . You used to filter the blow-by through your filter box, but now it just rises up into the air and into your nostrils. You'll get used to it. Plus after your rings seal it will be even less.
 
Like the others say, maybe some more miles on the new motor will help.
I route my breather hose (with K&N filter) to a "holder cup" I made from a rear shock dust cover. Goes under the seat. Eliminates the mess from discharge out the filter. Just wipe out accumulation now and then but placing a small folded piece of napkin on the bottom is even better. After some long/aggressive riding, I can get quite a bit of discharge out the filter. There is some smell.
