Gas mileage problem + popping from carbs

  • Thread starter Thread starter CB900SS

Again, thanks for all of the replies. My initial post was basically and mainly concerned with the condition of my valves. Although the fuel mileage does seem to suck, even though I have not topped the bike off to confirm the fuel gauge is correct.

These carburetors do not scare me at all, but I do want direct lift carbs on this bike... So I don't see the point in wasting my time and money with the CV's. The bike doesn't have any flat spots or problems like that, they are just really rich. So at least I know the motor should be safe being rich... Except for the issue with a possible fire at the filters.

I just had the carburetors off the bike when I did the cam chain tensioner gasket, and valves. I also installed all new valve cover bolts and gaskets for the cover... Along with some new crinkle paint on the cover. It came out nice. I think all I did to the carbs was check the mixture screws, they are at 3.5 turns out... Maybe I will just go to 2.5 and see if that helps at idle and when cold with the popping through the filters.

Thanks for the replies and making fun of Hondas. I still have a DOHC F I am building, and it will be pretty sick... I have a full titanium exhaust for that bike. :p

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Coming to a Suzuki site and using a Honda derived screen name is analogous to going to a Chevy car show while wearing a Ford hat and tee shirt. Or maybe being out on a date and taking about your ex.

speed is a ?

speed is a ?

Speed is a question of money how fast do you want to go ?
How about 125mph in the 1/8 mi Seven pounds of boost ( it would go up to 20 lbs boost)3/4 of the throttle
That was breaking the bike in wait until spring all for under 10 grand
for all you honda guys money talks and you know the rest

That gave me a good chuckle! ;) I am just known as that SN in many different places, it doesn't really bother me, I can handle the ribbing I will get.

That's my kind of bike Anthony! But certainly beyond my budget, I was thinking some RS's and the kerker exhaust I have will get me by for a while. :| I also want to get the fairing off for the sping, but am having a real hard time finding the stock parts.

I really like the seat, was it just a stock unit cut down and re-covered?

yes it was taken apart then cut with a meat knife then the stock cover put back on with staples what I was trying to say my dad's friend bought a 1150 in 1985 did a jet kit pipe and filters and ran low 9's after he rode the bike a hour and twenty minutes to get to the track and then the same home every weekend for two years you can make the stock carbs work great. if it was me I would spend my extra money on the clutch springs and a welded clutch hub to get rid of the week link. then you can hammer on it for many years here is my street version I have a bassani and a set of K&N?s and a jet kit for it but I don?t know it want to f it up yet

I would be interested in buying your fairings if they were for sale

I hear you Anythony, thanks for the advice.

That EF looks good dude, I wish I would have realized they made two version of bar end weights. I ordered a complete new set for my bike but got the smaller E versions. If I had realized I would have ordered the longer (heavier?) ones that you have.

I will be keeping the fairing, for cold weather riding. I need a bunch of parts for it and its not in that great of shape anyway. I need the right side lower inner metal bracket, and the large black plastic insert that wraps around the top inside of the fairing... Someone cut holes in it for speakers and a deck.

Where in NY are you? And that's your son on the bike right?

If you cannot return the bar-ends for heavier ones, simply make a couple slugs from steel/ss bar, from scrap available at your local machine shop, turned down to the appropriate dia. to press-fit your bars. I turned a 4" length of steel to .688", if memory serves (the I.D. of my Superbike bars is .690), cut the piece in half, and pushed the slugs about an inch into the bars. Then topped it off with a sweet pair of carbon fiber bar-ends. Not sure what the heavier stock 1150 ends weigh, but apart from the Manic Salamander ends, none of the aftermarket items have any significant heft to them, and are more for cosmetic than vibration-damping purposes. I didn't feel like shelling out $80 for MS ends, and the steel slugs out-weigh them, and do the job beautifully for free. This mod, coupled with the Carbtune have made bar vibes largely a thing of the past on my 1100. ;)

No that is me on the bike I will be 18 in january I have 9 old suzukis (from gs1000's to 1150's) my dad and i build and I race. the red bike was my christmas- birthday present this year we are building another drag bike now as my dad says it is better than watching TV I live in Endicott outside of binghamton it is where IBM started P.S. does your 1150 vibrate bad in your hands

That is so sweet dude, your dad is a smart man! Building a drag bike is certainly better than watching TV.. TV makes you brain dead.

So your pretty far upstate then?

My 1150 did vibrate pretty badly when I got it, but it had no bar end weights at all. The weights I added pretty much cured that, but I am sure when I get the bike running a little smoother it will be even better. But like I said its very slight.

I read a post here somewhere about abnormal vibration being carbs out of sink I looked but I can not find now

Thanks for looking Anthony. The bike does idle very smoothly so I believe the carbs are very close in synchronization. I had a motion pro mercury set but the rubber top rotted on it and the mercury spilled. I will eventually get a morgan carbtune. But hopefully by that time the CV carbs will be on ebay and some mikuni RS's will be introducing my mixture to my motor.

I have a set of 29's on my gs1000 that bike is a gas hog every time I went for a ride last summer it was twenty dollars it adds up I also have a set of 36mm rs flat slides the pump is missing parts but I dont think i need the pump I will be using them on the new drag bike WFO all the time

Anthony, put my bike back in the garage.
I've got 2 1150's and carbs out of sync are not always felt. Another thing is cam chain tention might need adjusting. That seems to have quite an effect on my street 1150. Mileage drops to around 30 under sedate riding conditions and drops to 20 when the pace is picked up, if the tentioner is loose.
The big GS were never known for great fuel milage. My 1100's were just as bad. The 'Busa and Bandit are quite a bit more fuel frugal

what is that fairing doing on that e model anyway ? It hurts my eyes. Is that bike running 7.50 in the 1/8

7.50 inthe 1/8

I am running 7.50 at 95 mph with this 1980 1100.

Hey another E with a fairing... I need to find the stock parts to remove my fairing, but everyone things the side ears are worth their weight in gold.

Thanks for the advice Mad Jack, but my cam chain might actually be too tight(see my other thread). Hopefully I didn't damage it, I need to pull the adjuster and re-set it. Maybe I will score a manual tensioner pretty soon.

Hmm, I don't know.... quite honestly, my bike ('82 1100E) has not returned less than 39 mpg, with mixed-pace riding, whenever I've checked (sedate riding will yield 40+). And this is with 36mm Mikuni's and K&N pods....otherwise stock. Now running a manual APE cam chain tensioner.....the stock 1100/1150 item wasn't adjustable AFAIK, not sure what type is used on the GS1000. My friend bought an '07 Busa, and he too says it is surprisingly fuel efficient.

Tony.

Been a while since I looked at this thread. Yes the dial in is 7.50 but look at Santa Clause on top of it. 255lbs and the altitude is 4800ft. I've run 7.10 at 3800. All with 60k on the clock.
By the way just a "S" tank on a "ES"

So I finally set my cam chain tensioner and decided to go for a little ride.

First thing I did was go and fill my tank and check the fuel mileage. It only took 3.317 gallons and I went about 104 miles, giving me 31+ MPG. So I would agree with what was suggested about the fuel gauge not being accurate... Is there anyway to adjust what the gauge reads with whats in the tank?

Also I mentioned about the bike having some vibration that I didn't like... Well either I got used to it, didn't notice it during this short ride (too cold?), or it went away due to the correct tension on the cam chain?
