Gasket Set - Can't Find Genuine

Guys, I've been looking for a gasket set in preparation for when I get to put my '81 450 back together, but am having no luck in finding a genuine Suzuki set.

I've tried some places with NOS parts as the sets are now discontinued, any other suggestions to try?

I've seen on various threads and searches that Vesrah brand is one to avoid. Is there any other brand that is good or good to be avoided?

Have you tried to get the individual gaskets from Suzuki
Vesrah if you can't get the Suzuki ones

It's on the microfiches under "OPTIONAL"

9-2 GASKET SET 11401-44854 (replaces 11400-44880)

$116.74 at Flat Out Motorcycles here in the USA.

You'll likely still need to order several individual seals and whatnot (once you get the set, you can figure out what is and is not included -- they don't tell you ahead of time), but there you go.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I didn't check flatout, but I was pretty sure Bike Bandit and Alpha Sports both had them listed as discontinued.

I also haven't combed the fiches for the individual gasket numbers yet, but that's probably what I'll have to do.

Our exchange rate is making stuff in the USA and Europe look rather expensive at the moment unfortunately.

Quick edit: Forgot to say how jealous I am of all you guys over there who get such choice on where to buy stuff. My nearest Suzuki dealer is a pain to get to and no motorcycle retailers here are open on Sundays which is the only time I can ever get to go visit them...

Ok, I'm currently going through the parts fiche on Alpha Sports but I can't find a part number for the crankcase gasket.

I'm assuming here (and going by what I can see on mine) that there is a gasket that sits between the crankcase halves, but there's nothing listed on the crankcase page for this.

There's only 1 gasket listed on that page and it appears that it sits underneath a bolt.

Anyone have any tips on this?

There is no gasket to go between the two crankcase halves, some sort of sealer is used on the outer edges, like suzukibond or threebond.

Errr yeah... just opened my manual and guess what it says? Perhaps I should start reading before typing in future :o

Thanks guys.

Does anyone know what gaskets and seals come in the Suzuki kit? I'm rebuilding a GS1000 engine and people have been bashing aftermarket gasket kits pretty bad lately.

Nessism, I was quite pleased with the GS1000G 80-81 Athena gasket set from partsnmore. Mine was listed as lot number 20060525 and once I had sorted out my confusion with the latest head gasket spec that was included, all was well. All the o-rings are also included but no oil seals these I just bought as required from a bearing supplier seperately
I cannot vouch for an older spec set which I know uses the more well known type of head gasket as discovered in my quest.
Hope this helps (the price was a very attractive $61 for a 61 piece set)

Matchless,

What do you mean regarding "latest head gasket spec"?

It's the head gasket that concerns me with aftermarket kits, not everything else. Is the Athena head gasket fiber composite or multi layer metal type?

I bought the Athena set before I saw all the bashing. Not installed yet, we'll see.

The earlier Athena had a fiber gasket with a large rectangular opening for the rectangular oring around the cam opening and larger holes on the 4 outer studs to accomodate some copper crush washers. I have a 1995 Athena parts list refering to that.

My newer full Athena kit (2006) did not have the rectangular oring included and came with a MLS headgasket (3 layers) coated with Viton rubber, it also did not have larger holes for the four outer studs. After communicating with Athena in Italy they confirmed that the headgasket was according to the latest OEM spec from Suzuki and that it did not require the rectangular oring. I have not found anyone who has bought the latest OEM spec headgasket for a GS1000 as most available still seems to be of older stock and thus not the latest OEM spec. If this is so the latest OEM should be MLS as well?
Some Internet research showed that aftermarket MLS gaskets have a thicker layer of some sealing compound to make up for any imperfections on the metal as these really require a near perfect smooth finish and that most new cars are using these now.
I have installed the MLS head gasket without any oring or any seals around the outer studs as this new head gasket provides that seal and have had no leaks to date, but will only be able to really give more reliable feedback in a few years time...!
Just a comment, my old gasket that came out was also a MLS type, but was covered with a thin layer of silver like paint, and also covered the oring opening. This was fitted in 1994 when the engine was rebuilt. A friend of mine salvaged it, cleaned it and lightly sprayed it with high temperature silver engine paint and fitted on his GS1000 and has since done quite a few hundred kilometers without any problems.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link Matchless, that's a good backup if I can't find OEM ones over here for a reasonable price. $56 US will make it about $81.60 Australian going by the current Google converter exchange rate, which is pretty good.

The gasket's currently listed as backordered at the moment, but hopefully if I do need them they get some back in stock.

MLS head gasket is good I think. Not sure actually. My project budget is seriously in trouble so might have to gamble on an Athena set.
