Gauge Improvements or Mods?

My 82 1100E is in generally good shape but the gauges are not. The speedo, tach and gas gauge work, but the odometer and oil temp gauge don't and the idiot lights are flaky at best. I have a complete Vapor computer set up that I bought a few years ago to replace the entire gauge assembly but I wouldn't mind some other choices for keeping the OEM gauge cluster but regaining function, especially the oil temp and odometer. Installing the Vapor is going to involve harness surgery and I want to explore all the alternatives before I permanently chop things up.

All suggestions/experiences/thoughts are welcome.

I'd hazard a guess that cleaning the connections and coating them with dialectric grease would go a long way towards restoring functionality. Trace the wiring as far as possible looking for obvious breaks or damage. Make sure you have a sound ground as well. As far as the odometer that's a bit trickier. It sounds like the drive for it might have bit it for whatever reason and I am not sure if they are repairable. I found this if it helps.

I have been through a lot of it, but have not pulled the back off the gauge cluster. The ground is good as far as I can see and I have installed an SH775 R/R along with single point ground set up. That did help the dash some, with the dash lights much brighter and more stable. Most of the time I have ridden it (I have owned it since 2004) I just ignored the flakiness because it didn't really affect operation, but now that I am restoring other things I am starting to get the itch to sort the gauges as well.

How good are you with a soldering iron? I have heard that doing some touch-up work on ALL of the contacts on the circuit board can work some wonders, not sure if it was this particular model or the '80/'81.
