gauge redesigning ideas

I have a vision....

I want to ditch everything I don't like about my gauge cluster on my 1980 GS1000G - the gear position indicators, turn signal lights, idiot lights. I want to mount the original speedo and tach w/fuel gauge - the parts I do like - in cups or some such thing mounted to the handlebar or to the original gauge mount points. I'm looking for absolute minimalist look and feel - which is why the original guage cluster has got to go.

I'm looking for ideas in general, has anyone done this before and has some pictures? Also where can I find cups and handlebar mounting hardware?

I like those guages. The catalog is in Dutch and I'm illiterate in anything except English - and some in that. Please tell me the pricing and any specifics such as dimensions, guage range, etc. Thanks.

I did this mod on my GS1150:

Oil-temp from Biltema, tacho from SPA-design. speedo from Sigma, cups from VDO and Biltema, LED:s for the indication.

Actually the speedo from Sigma is not needed as the SPA tacho has a digital speedo (among other features), but I like the clock and the extra ODO in the Sigma.

Don't get discouraged buddy. Sometimes it takes a while for people to post ideas in your thread. I know how that feels. But they will. And then guys with similiar interests as yourself will come along (like in this case Swanny) and your thread will come to life with ideas.

These guys and gals on this forum do have a diverse range of tastes and opinions and I see you are getting some now

My input is that I don't like the look of newer, modern more technical looking parts on vintage bikes. To me it makes them look like a hack. I go for the stock look. In your case, you may do well to see how much someone that does fiberglass or body work would charge you to make new covers for yours since you mention you like the gauges and even the original mount and just want to get away from the bulk of the one big unit.

Maybe a gauge cluster from an older GS might be the thing too? They were less bulky than the ones like you have.

So Karl, you basically spent the equivalent of $1000 on your cluster. That's a very nice looking guage cluster, but my guages only cost $100 more and came with a running bike attached.

Or you could eliminate the gauge cluster completely and go with a heads-up display. Not cheap, but the most minimal gauge cluster is NO gauge cluster....

Glad you also like the SPA tacho and got it for reasonable money, the problem is that in Sweden (where I live) it's very hard to find a GS with SPA-tacho and to that price you got, I would say impossible.

I just spoke to Paul at Electrosport (used to be Electrex) about the Acewell Pro 4 meter. The unit with all the bells and whistles (ACE-3853) will be available in two to four weeks.

He said they have been testing them for about six months and that Acewell is incorporating their ideas into the final product.

The Tach input is inductive, so it doesn't have any effect on the ignition system.

The best part is that the full up unit will be priced in the $150.00 range with the install kit.

How cool is that?

Thank you all for your ideas! However like some others I'm really not willing to dump serious amounts of cash into new gauges etc. I'm thinking I will just keep the original tacho with the cool orange backlight and modify the mounting bracket so it only has one leg, and use my money to have a cup fabbed for it and purchase a bicycle speedo. Then I can keep a somewhat stock look using the old gauge but add my own touch with a one-off cup mounted off center. Thanks again!
