The guy I bought the bike off told me that he'd "shorted out" the shift indicator at some stage. So I decided to find out what the problem was. GS750EC.
Argh! Some people shouldn’t be let loose on classic motorcycles!
The indicator assembly consists of a PCB about 15mm x 70mm with 10 x LEDs (5 groups of 2, in series for each gear position), a 470ohm resister and a diode, housed in a plastic enclosure which is screwed into the back of the gauges panel. +12V is supplied to a copper rail on the board, and the switch selects Earth (Ground) to each of the LED couples, depending on gear position.
All components were still OK, but the PCB tracks had been lifted up and most of the 5 connections had separated!
It seems the PO (or the PO before him) had attempted to fix matters by trying to re-solder the leads directly on to the PCB from the position switch, probably without totally removing the assembly from the panel. The result was a botched mess!
I carefully removed said assembly and after realising that most of the copper tracks on the PCB were stuffed, scaped them away and proceeded to mount a new set of w/c* red LEDs into the original holes, and “hard-wire” them. Tested the arrangement, all good, just need to re-mount everything….tomorrow!

* w/c means "Water/clear" i.e. LED that looks clear but has a specific colour.
