A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi I am having a problem with my gear shift shaft on 85 gs 700 E . I removed the keeper and the washer from the shaft to inspect the seal . (chasing oil leaks) The shaft must have slid out a little bit when I did this . The washer and the keeper were flush against the case originally . Now the keeper is roughly 3/16 or so from being flush . It seemed to go in all the gears so I rode it worked fine for most the ride . towards the end it would not let me shift up or down unless I put inward pressure on the shifter . So it is obvious that the shaft is not in far enough . Does anyone have an idea as to why I can not get it all the way in . Help is much appreciated thanks 70GT

pull your clutch basket out and center the teeth on the shaft and shifter pawl.
bad idea doing what you did.
reinstall the washer and clip then reinstall the clutch side.
rock it back and forth and make sure you have all the gears including neutral.
if your lucky you may be able to just remove the clutch cover and center the teeth up.
i don't have one of these bikes here to look at.
someone else that owns one of these bikes may come along and improve upon my recommendations.

Thanks Blowerbike I did as you said . Things are working good now . I did have to pull the basket to fix it . Upside to this is it gave me a chance to inspect things and I now know how to take it apart and put it back together . No stranger to a wrench but each repair on my gs (there has been many) has been a learning experience . Thanks 70GT :)
