A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Seriously looking at a 1979 1000L for a mild and I do mean mild custom build. Can anyone tell me if the frame is different from the E model? I want to make it look less like a cruiser and more like a cafe, tracker, drag bike etc. Is this a waste of time?

Dave

The 'L' models have a different frame, yes, and also generally a smaller tank and pullback bars.

I'd start with the regular E model instead.

From what I have seen comparing them side by side the major difference between a 79 L and reg 1000 and e is the way the seat attaches and latches. The mounts for the front of the tank are different but there are holes where the post would be for the front rubber mounts go on the reg 1000 and e. The other major difference is the front forks, so it comes down to how much work are you willing to do and how many parts are you willing to change.

If you are going to cut it up and customize it anyway, please start with an L model.
They like that.

New handlebars will take most of the L out. The rear fender and seat will help, which you'll do anyway for a cafe mod.

Just love taps!

New bars on my L made a huge difference in appearance. I also replaced the turn signals with something more sleek. My L is just my beater bike, she isn't much to look at but runs like a top.

Thanks for all the info. I don't plan to do much hacking, was hoping to just mount up different parts. Sounds like I might as well go for it. Does anyone know if any other tanks will fit? Or should I just look for a custom one of those as well. If all goes as planned I'll have some L parts for sale in the next week or so.

Can anyone tell me what the actual difference in the frame is? I just want to make sure I can mount up a different style seat if I do this. Ready to go pick her up Saturday, but would hate to get there and not like what I see.
