A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've read a few different references to what the optimal grounding setup is on the old GS as far as the starter, reg/rec and the battery are concerned.

1. Should I run a wire from the reg/rec to the neg terminal of the battery and also the frame? Both or 1?

2. Should I run a ground from the starter motor to the neg terminal of the battery also?

...or is this overkill. Everything is working just fine now but I want to do these mods regardless.

Thanks for any info. 8)

As a drag bike guy with a Dyna ignition system....I like to make sure I have a heavy ground tying the battery, the engine and the frame together....

I plan to do that on the GS750 I'm working on...

Don't know if that helps...

Good info. How do you have yours setup...

1. One wire going from the neg terminal of the batt to the frame and then onto the motor in a chain?

or

2. One wire going from the neg terminal of the batt to the frame and another separate wire going from the neg term of the batt to the motor?

I've also read about people grounding their starters and reg/rec units directly to the neg terminal of the batt. Did I say it right?

Dom,

I added a terminal strip from Radio Shack in the battery area. I jumpered half the terminals together with the flat jumper made for the terminal strip and painted the screws red. I jumpered the other half of the terminals together and painted the screws black. I ran one heavy red wire from the battery positive and a black one from the negative to the terminal strip. Now rather than having a spider web of wires connected to the battery terminals I have just one additional wire on each post. My R/R connects directly to the terminal strip as well as the relays I've added for horns, headlight cutout when starting, and keyswitch bypass. I still have several terminals available for future use.

Of course, what do I know? I wear bicycle shorts and use baby powder on my sensitive regions........................

This is exactly what I was looking for....perhaps a beer delivery on a rainy day is in order eh? :-D

Ryan mentioned that you got him a few extra volts with the mods you guys did on his GS...thats what I'm after.

Number 2. Battery to motor, battery to frame, battery to terminal block for all accesories.

I also did a terminal block for all the accesories like Joe Nardy said.
I got it at a boating supply store. It already has the screws on each side tied together:

Of course this is the drag bike, I don't think I'll add a terminal block on the street bikes. Just the heavy grounds.

I use three on the negative post: an 8 gauge wire to the frame, a wire from the mounting bolt of the R/R , and the wire that was originally there.

There is no point in grounding the starter as it bolts directly onto the frame, so, unless there is a problem with the battery/frame connection, there is nothing more to accomplish.

WOW, thank you all so much for taking the time to post. Thats a clean setup you got there Baatfam. Very nice, I'll be doing this very soon and hopefully the relays as well. Knowledge is power. WOW! 8)

Beer and voltage.......both good!
