A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi, (Nice to see the site again... it's been so long since I've been here, that I had to re-register.)

Anyway, it's also been a long time since I changed the engine oil and filter in my 1980 850G. Can one (or many) of you confirm what the correct amount of oil is to add?

Yes, I have the Clymer's manual but I can't find it. (It's lost in a bookcase or garage or somewhere... Arg!!)

Any other tips or suggestions are great... sight glass window, etc.

But my real problem is just how much, is the correct amount to add after an oil & filter change.

Thanks a ton, Greg

4 Quarts give or take. Fill it to Half on the sight glass, let it run a few minutes and then turn it off and check the sight glass in 10 minutes to see if more is needed. Do NOT fill to the top of the sight glass. All this with it on the center stand.

Wow !!
Nessism thanks for the quick reply and those two links!!
Just what I wanted to know, I really appreciate it.

In the meantime I looked up a metric conversion chart on the web... 'cause printed on the side case by the oil fill opening is "2800ml". According to the chart, that is almost exactly, 3 qts.

But I don't know if that is with or without, filter change.
Nessism's link says approx. 3 1/2 qts. with filter change. So I guess I'm in the ballpark. I just don't wanna over fill :)

BassCliff is da MAN!!!:):):)

You can fill to the top of the window when pouring the oil in first time. After you start the engine the oil the level will drop. Shut down the engine and check the level again after ONE minutes, that's what the factory service manual says to do. Top off oil as needed understanding that the oil level will continue to raise slightly (don't worry about it if it seems overfilled as long as the level is correct after one minute).

Good luck.

If and when you find your Clymer manual, take a look at Table 4 on page 46:

Engine oil:

Without fiter change:...2.8 liters......3.0 U.S. qt......2.0 Imp. qt.
With filter change:.......3.6 liters......3.8 U.S. qt......3.2 Imp. qt.
After overhaul:.............3.8 liters......4.0 U.S. qt......3.3 Imp. qt.
..............................

Ha! You beat me that time Mr. Steve. I was going to say add 800ml if you change the filter too. The case says 2800ml.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Excellent!!
You guys are the best!
I put in 3.0 qts.
then start... all good, no leaks.
Then put in 3/4 qt. more. Repeat, all good.
Let sit............................. Level is near "F" line!!!

I'm going for a short, late eve. ride. Then will check for leaks and sightglass one more time.

Thanks you so much: BassCliff, Steve, Nessism, Marvin and Robert Barr (had an email with) - You guys are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
