I just bought an 83 GS1100ES off russr33 and am looking for a seasoned mechanic in Austin to go through it. Someone who knows this era inside and out. Any recs appreciated!

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi,
Just so you know, having a shop work on your bike will quickly cost you more than the bike is worth. If you don't want to learn how to work on your own bike then it may be more cost-effective to sell the GS and buy a newer bike. But if money is no object, then I hope you find a good shop that won't butcher your bike.
Most of the regular maintenance is pretty easy. What kind of work do you need done?

If it was russ' bike it's already as good as it can be. Ride it and enjoy.

I am inclined to agree with the others. I have never met Russ, but based on what I have seen posted here, he either sold you a KNOWN project bike or a very reliable, very good-looking, daily driver that is borderline show bike. If it is a known project bike and you are not sure of YOUR mechanic skills, you should not have bought it.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I hear what you are saying. I'm actually pleased at your responses because they tell me moving forward here I should always be able to find the answers I need. While I'm actually an okay wrench, it's more a peace-of-mind thing having someone who earned a living on these bikes give me a one-time baseline. I know a lot about medicine and health too but I go to a doctor for my annual physical, and then take care of myself in-between

Russ is a great guy! I wouldn't assume too much though regarding the maintenance. I suggest talking you him before doing anything.
If you enjoy wrenching the GS is a great partner, and that bike is super clean so mostly it will only need simple things. You can start with checking the valve clearances and looking after the charging system grounds. Tons of info here to steer you along the way.
