All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 1977 GS550 and it is not running quite right, it has an erratic idel under 2000 rpm, it may jump or fall a couple of hundred rpm, also when I am riding if I accelerate hard it is slow getting up to speed and when the rpm gets above 6500 it sputters, I have set the points at .018, does this sound good to you, please help

I'm going to go waaaaay out on a limb, because it could be a lot of things, but this is an easy one to check:

Make sure your throttle cable is in good shape. The throttle control should snap back when you release it. Also, in my Clymer's manual, there is a diagram showing the distances involved in the "clip" where the cable mounts to the carbs. I don't know the technical terms for that... so I'm somewhat at a loss to describe it better. Another possibility, the cable itself is "stretched" and just needs replaced.

My thought is that if the cable isn't adjusted correctly, it won't idle smoothly because the carbs aren't pulling enough gas (check your idle screw, while you're down there...), and it sputters above 6500 because it can't open the carbs any farther.

The Clymer's manuals are worth every penny, if you do a lot of your own work on the bike, they save a lot of time and guesswork. At least for this "know enough to be dangerous" bike mechanic.

Good luck, and hopefully its that simple. These GS's are well worth the work once you've got 'em running right.

I fixed the problem, apperently I had a plug that was fouled out, it is amazing how fast it is when it is firing on four cylinders instead of three

Re: GS not running right

Points gap range is 12 to 16 thousandths. I set them to 14 thou.
