    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS Streetfighter rides mint, I replaced most of everything, I had the bores honed out (lightly) as there was no scores in them.
I checked the rings in the bores before I rebuilt the engine, which showed a gap of .020/.508mm, The gap I figured was ok!
Well, while I thought I was running the GS in i noticed it was using more and more oil, Everytime I went out on it the oil would diminish from the oil window and I was filling up more and more.
No oil leaks anywhere!
I did notice that it was smoking, not bad, but still smoking.
I stripped it all down today, the exhaust outlets were sooty, the exhaust/intake valves sooty/flakey and the pistons very very clean on top and sides (all 4) covered in clean oil.
No carbon on crown of pistons, but combustion area around valves really sooty/flakey.
Only 300 miles since complete rebuild/decoke.
I put the new rings (compression) in the bores and show a gap of .013/.330mm.
I did not check the oil rings, I was told off someone that the oil is getting past the oil rings and past the compression rings.
Further I was told NEVER over lap the the oil ring (squiggly ring) as oil will go past it.
Only 15k on these rings, My question is, if I replace the rings (all 4) will it stop my oil comsumption/smoke, is that gap on new rings OK.
I may have to have it rebored, but that means more $$$$ and waiting period!
I compression checked it about a week ago, they were all over 150.

OH! I just got my oil sender unit from the Ozzy guy (Sheriffbuckley) it looks awesome, will give you an update on that item when my oil cooler is bolted up.

You didn't mention if you put new oil seals on the valves.

I don't know what you/they mean by overlapping the oil control rings. There are 3 of them, 2 scrapers and an expansion ring. Personally, I don't like the gaps in the scrapers in line with each over. I prefer them overlapped. The expansion ring, when in properly does not overlap itself. I guess that's hard to describe, however, if you need further explanation then maybe you put them in wrong.
 
Swanny, I believe he is referring to the expansion ring. It is fairly easy to 'overlap' the ends when putting them together.
 
I assume that you burnt less oil when you first started riding it after the rebuild. You have nothing to loose by giving it a few really hard acceleration runs in a row to bed in the rings if that is the problem. It sounds to me that it is something else but like bores or ring installation or valve seals but try the bed in trick before you tear it down again. Its fun and easy. If you do tear it down again, check your bores with a good ring placed in the bore at different positions. They might be very different at different places causing the rings to actually "pump" oil.
 
I have a policy NEVER reuse piston rings, always replace them

It has new oil valve seals, thats the 1st thing I did, it is all stripped down now, the new rings (slid in the bores) look better and the gap is a lot smaller than the rings with 15k on them, I guess when I put it together on Thursday, I hope it doesn't smoke with the new rings.
Yes I was refering to the oil scraper rings, I have always overlapped them..
 
You have to make sure the ends of the wavey ring butt against each other and not overlap. If they overlap they won't hold the oil back. Guaranteed.

Well, I finally put new rings in it, I checked the gap which was well within spec, I butted up the oil scraper ring and now it runs sooooooo much better, no smoke and not a GS oil eater anymore, Thanks guys for your input.
