Hi, I'm new to GS's and I'm looking at a couple different bikes to buy right now. One is a 81 850G the other a 78 1000E. My question is, are the parts pretty much the same price wise between these 2 models? Are parts generally more expensive for either one? Where do the people on this forum go for parts? I just got a price of $170 for a brake rotor (which I thought was kinda steep) so I thought I'd ask on here before buying either one. Thanks. Great site by the way, I've already learned alot.

Hi Jetmech,
Welcome aboard.
I would base my choice on the model I like best, not the price of parts.
Have you assessed what need to be fixed on each bike?
I go to cheapcycleparts.com for my 850.
Not the quickest delivery, but surely the cheapest.
Where are you located?

Greetings and Salutations!

Hi Mr. jetmech,

You should have no trouble finding parts for either bike. Yes, some OEM parts are a little pricey. In which case there's always ebay and our Parts Wanted section here in the forum. You'll be able to tell from my website which bike I would lean toward. Let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike! :D

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

You'll probably have a somewhat easier time finding parts for the '81 850, but both were and are pretty popular.

A lot of large parts and cosmetic parts are NLA from Suzuki, so you definitely need to have good eBay skills to own a GS.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not going to base my decision on the price of parts, I just didnt want to be suprised later on. I like them both actually but I'd rather get the 1000. The 850 needs atleast 1 rotor, a dragging brake, has charging issues, and a few oil leaks. Clean bike though. Price $850. I'm trying to figure what its worth and I wasnt sure how much these parts go for or the cheapest place to get them.

Rotors are cheap on ebay, about 20 bucks delivered although you might have to buy a pair if that is how they are listed. I sell Honda RR kits that replace the Suzuki RRs for 40 dollars, I've sold quite a few here the past year. I would go for the 850 since parts are a little easier to find and they share much in common with the 1100, 1000, and even the 650 bikes ( like brake rotors)

I actually have a pair of rotors on my 650G from an 850G so I know they fit.

$20 now thats more like it! If I can get stuff that cheap I'll buy both bikes:lol:, fix them up, and decide which one to keep later. Whichever machine I get I'll be posting pics and asking lots of questions. I've always been a muscle car/drag race guy, but after seeing some of the bikes on here I'd like to try restoring one of these things. I'm in CT by the way.

Hello and welcome to GSR.. I'm sure either bike you decide on will give you many mile of smiles :D.
