A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello all,

A while back I posted a thread about scored cam bearings on my GS1000. I've since sourced a replacement head and have been working on it...lapping the valves and installing new valve guide seals.
But now that I'm looking at it more closely it seems to be missing one of the bolt holes that is on the bike I have. In looking at the parts fisches for 1979 and 1980 GS1000's the 80 has an extra bolt hole between cylinders 2 and 3 on the edge of the exhaust side in front of the cam chain area, the 79 does not have this bolt.

Soooo, can I use the head without the extra bolt hole on this bike, or have I spent a lot of time on a head that I can't use?

Thanks.

Yes, you can use it. The early head has smaller intake ports though, so if your bike has CV carbs the boots won't bolt up.

I think the carbs are VM but I'll double check that the boots fit.

I have the matching cams, cam cover etc... Can you let me know what else I'll need to change?

Thanks.

(I think my variation of this question is answered, but)....I have a "new to me" 1978 GS1000, and from what I can tell there is 1980's+ cylinder installed. There is a tab on the cylinder that should have a mating tab on the head, and a bolt connecting the two. I also have what seems to be the original 1978 cylinder, no tab. I was told that the motor was basically ready to go (I have no reason to doubt the seller, being an experienced builder, but maybe not Suzuki...).

If you can put a 1978 head on a 1980 GS1000, assume (risky) that you can take an 1980 GS1000 cylinder and insert it into a 1978 GS1000 motor?cyl head mismatch.jpg

The tabs in the front are a "nice to have". Not required. Just make sure to use OEM Suzuki gaskets. Not some crappy aftermarket gaskets prone to leaking. Those screws in the front are there to provide a little extra leakage protection is all.
