Hi all,

the black box on my sparktronic ignition has given up, it's firing on 2 cylinders only (middle two). Anyone know if these are repairable or are they chuckable once broken? Would any electronic ignition be suitable now this ones knacked? ie: Boyer Branson looks like the one but will it just fit to the same wiring modifications or will i have to put the loom back to standard before altering additional wiring? Has anyone got one they want to sell me?

Thanks in advance

Dyna ignitions are what most people use these days. Are you sure the coil for 1 & 4 hasn't gone south?

Cheers for the reply but yeah, coil ok. If i change the two coil feeds around, the middle two cylinders will stop firing and outer two start to fire so coils are ok (when i say fire, i mean that the coils are sparking, i haven't tried to fire the bike up with ignition wires reversed obv). I've seen a couple of ignition systems out there and i've sent emails to both asking for the wiring diagrams so i can check to see whats involved with fitting to my system but i haven't had a reply :(. I'm not worried about carrying out the installation but because the bike came with this ignition already fitted, i don't know what they altered to make it work and i would presume (100% sure actually) that the new ignition would come with a diagram that shows alterations to standard looms, not ones already hacked away at.

I wonder if anyone on here has a diagram they could pm me that shows the wiring alterations? That would let me at least see whats involved and check it against my current modified loom before i purchased a new one.

Dyna has the wiring diagrams for their products available for download on their webside. Installation is very easy and only requires hooking up a few wires - easy to figure our regardless of how "hacked" your current wiring is.

Boyer units are normally very reliable - I've never had one go south on me so I'd guess you had a dodgy connection somewhere (try looking behind the points cover - chances are it's there).

Their website is pretty good - they've got a fault finding page and you'll find the wiring diagrams / set up instructions on there as well. Check out:

http://www.boyerbransden.com/faultfinding.html

They'll also take units back in for testing.

Edit: Sorry - I read your post wrong - I thought you had a problem with your Boyer unit. I'll leave above as is though

Cheers Nessism, i'll have a look at their site for a diagram.

Hi hampshirehog, my unit is a sparktronic, not a Boyer. Boyer is one of the units i was looking at as a replacement. My sparktronic is deffo shagged cos i opened the back of the black box (it's a pretty primitive design really) and a little black resistor or diode or whatever is all burnt and corroded. This is in-line with the wire that comes out and plugs into the coil that feeds 1 & 4 cylinders. If i swap the wires at the coils, then 2 & 3 cylinders don't work but 1 & 4 do. Think the sparktronic box is a doorstop now, i was just a little worried that i wouldn't be able to figure out how to put another unit in when the loom is already hacked. My new worry would be what made the unit blow in the first place, i wouldn't want to fit a new one and find that "smoking a fat one" on me as well.

I'll take a peek at the Dyan website and hopefully figure out how to wire a new one in and then i'll have to order one asap :(

Cheers for the info Dude's

Do a search for GS1000E CDI on ebay and several will pop up. Be sure to scroll down and look in stores and international sellers. That is of course if you want another stock box.

Hey ktp1598,

i searched eBay and found a few listings as you said would be there. Thing is, those appear to be for an engine with CDI as standard maybe? My engine was originally a points based system, converted to electronic by previous owner. I think those listings i've just found are for electronic ignition based systems, they look like those on my 650kat. I may be wrong, i've had many many beers at the time of writing this post, sorry.........

CDI is the wrong term to use for the stock ignitions anyway. CDI units were normally only used on old two-strokes.

Sorry Billy, my bad........

I don't think the ones i've seen on eBay are compatible with my loom, they appear to be for an engine with stock electronic ignition whereas mine was originally a points based system.

Not sure if ANY thou engine had electronic ignition as standard (enter comments here) but after searching for GS1000E CDI as suggested earlier, all i found was electronics that look identical to those of my 650 kat, i don't think they would be a straight forward swap onto my system? I may be wrong of course, it would deffo not be the first time.....
