    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello Every one, i have a 80 GS1000G that i bought for 300 dollars. It needs tons of work, the wire harness is severely hacked, the brakes are stuck, the carbs have issues, the tank leaks, the paint is beyond crap, and the suspension may need to be rebuilt. That is just what comes to mind. I figured i would start a thread documenting my trials a tribulations along with my loss of hair and sanity.

This is the bike as it set when i bought it. It ran, it rode, how i don't know. I'm in deep and very determined to make it awesome.

What's the game plan for it Daniel? Back to stock rider? Resto mod? Interested to see where you go with it. I sometimes kick myself for getting the 850 and not a 1000 but the price was right for it at $300 so I can't complain.
 
Right now my plan is total function. I want it be safe and reliable before i do any thing that is not stock. The only changes i have in mind down the road is possibly a new tank and seat of some kind.
 
Please post some more pic's of your bike. From what little I can see, I see an '82 airbox, L model side cover, perhaps '79 1000E or '79 850G fender, etc.
Can't quite make out the front brakes and forks clear enough to see where those came from.
 
I think it is a mix of parts from another bike. Some time this week i am going to go look at a bike that i am told is the same as the one i have. It has no title and he said it ran when it was parked how ever long ago. I can grab it for 100$. Make a good parts bike.

I will get some pictures up tomorrow.

Question,
Should the number on the motor match the VIN number on the frame?
 
Engine number and VIN serial number are different.

That bike looks fixable. There are tons of 850 part around so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

The '82 airbox will work with the '80 sidecovers (if you find the right one), but it will look a little different.

I had the same situation on one of my 850s.

Actually the side covers are some that some one cut out of sheet metal. I had a feeling that the air box was off anouther bike. It says gs850g on it. Could that be why i cant get it to fit the carbs. Seems like the spacing is a bit off.
 
Nice project, good base to start with, I have seen worse, check out my 1000G build in my signature.
THe instruments and headlight are off an L not a G, but as Steve said, these are minor and will not stop you building a good solid safe bike, and G parts are plentfull.
Will be following with interest.
 
She needs some work. If im not mistaken a tank with that petcock is not original to this bike. If the instrument cluster is also not original then that would explain why the wire diagram shows two signal lights and this one only has one in the cluster.

Wiring has been my main focus so far. Every thing works except the turn signals.

So far so good.

You will be miles ahead if you go through the carbs straight away. Rebuild tutorial linked in my signature.

Are you a R/C airplane builder? If so, rebuilding the bike shouldn't pose much of a problem. Just follow the guidance provided on Basscliff's website and you will get along fine.
 
Yes i love me some airplanes, its been a passion of mine since i was very little. When i get aggravated with the wiring i stop and work on the carbs some.
 
This thread is fun to watch. The pics look like they could be from my bike as I have an 1100 and going through similar work with similar timing. Except, my airplanes are in a different room :)

(Is that a Twisted Hobbys plane I see? I never knew a foamie could be so much fun until I got my TH plane.)

Yep that's a twisted hobbies plane. Its crazy how a peice of foam can be so much fun.


I managed to get the signal lights working today on the bike. All i have to do is finish up a few minor things and the wire harness will be back and working in proper order.
 
Went and looked at a good parts bike today, its a 82 GS1000g. It was all there minus the side covers. I hope the guy has them stashed some where. He is letting me pick it up for a 100$. It doesn't have a title and it kind of rough looking like its been out in the weather for a while. I wouldn't be to surprised how little it would take to get it to run. Hoping to go pick it up Friday.

The 1000G was only produced in '80 and '81.

The '82s were 1100cc, making them a GS1100.

Thanks for setting me straight on that. If the 1000 were to kick the bucket would that 1100 bolt up it in?

Yes. But I believe that may need some other drive-line parts from the 1100G which would not be a problem as you would have the entire bike. ;)
Contact me via PM if/when you decide to sell off any of the 1100G parts that you don't need please including the front end.
