    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1000L / 81 Starter problem

Bike started Allways well, by starter button.
Battery new and charged.
Starter button press: Soneloid works, clicks
Starter button release: Sonleoid release, clicks
No current goes to starter motor.

If direct 12V (+) added to the starter motor, the motor runs, but due to contact problems, huge sparks generated. :D

Strange enough I measured the resistance of the cable from Soneloid out to the starter and see some resistance.

Any idea what can be the problem? To me cable breaks, but no touch on cable and connections since long time.

hi and welcome. firstly you should go to the GS owners forum and introduce yourself properly before wading in asking technical questions.
as for the starter, try putting 12v on to the solenoid post that feeds the starter. if it spins over then the solenoid is faulty.
firstly, you should remove all cables and clean them up first and make sure the connections are good and tight.

Sorry this is my 3rd registration to this forum as I had been deactivated not log on for some times. (I had no problem with the bike. :-)
I also tried to found resolution in the old post, but I might not entered the right keywords.
I made a picture with comments about the cables.

Is it possible a contact or breakege between the starter motor and the outer connection of the soneloid? I tried to add direct 12V to the soneloid, but it did not worked, only when I added to the motor.
Shall I take out the cable and check connections? (I did not messed with it for some years, but this problem never occured before.

I found the problem: Cable from soneloid to starter motor got corroded inside.

There was a small (old) damage on the isulation what had been repaired, but the small cooper wire parts got corrosion and finally it was not able to carry the Amps to the starter.
By resistance measurement it looked OK, and the problem developed suddenly. Even no heat was experienced when I used the starter before.

It was a tricky failure.

That is pretty amazing; was the bike stored outside or near the coast (salty ocean air) ?
