Very bottom basket that is between the engine cases and transmission is leaking and I'd like to replace it. I'm curious if can just turn the engine upside down and pull the tranny cover off to replace it. The engine is already out, and in assuming the crank will stay put since it has the cam chain around it . Would these be a good approach for replacement?

no gasket there.
use yamabond or suzuki tri bond.
be aware of the 3 shift forks have to line up during reassembly.

Yes, flipping the motor over is the way to go whether you're replacing the oil pan or splitting the cases

If you're splitting the cases , be sure to remove any bolts on the top side before you flip the motor over

If you go to a Suzuki dealer, the Threebond 1207B is the stuff you want if it's for the case halves. Ray.

Thanks a lot guys. Especially blowerbike, I was all set to buy a stator cover and clutch basket off of you a few weeks ago but had to back out at the very last min. Im very sorry and hopefully work will pick back up for me because it is putting a huge dent in my motorcycling habits!

If you pulling the case's watch out for the 2 bolts in the oil filter area that most people miss and the one under the oil pressure sensor.

You need a very small amount of bond otherwise it squeezes out all over the place, inside and outside and can get jammed up in the oil ways. You want about a 'fag paper' thickness or almost see through to get it right.

no problem just let me know if you need anything or information in the future.

yeah, engine was rebuilt about four years ago by a very reputable mechanic and it seems this past year all my gaskets for one reason or another have decided to leak. I have the bike tore down and engine out so i'm doing all of them. seems strange to me that there is no gasket between the cases. wouldnt that be prone to leak all the time?

No need for a gasket. Just use sealer between the crankcase halves. Many OE car engines don't use gaskets on many of the joints either.

I guess the real question at hand should be what has caused the leak. The engine was rebuilt three years ago , has probably 300 miles on rebuild but did sit for two years. The block was purchased separate from cases and head. I've heard that blocks take time to marry with new cases and heads. And a final thought , the bike had a bad Petcock that has since been replaced, what is the possibility of gasoline overflowing into engine and deluting oil causing leaks everywhere. None the less going to replace gaskets as i see fit , just don't want to run into this again.

Block marry with the case? - if someone hands you an anthropomorphic line like that, just walk away. Stupidist thing I've ever heard. If it fits and is not warped, it's ready to go.

Who told you that?

Most likely the result of cheap gaskets. Be sure you use genuine Suzuki gaskets when you reassemble the motor

Yes, a leaky petcock will fill the lower cases with gas and dilute the oil. That could result in leaks or engine damage

My buddy had a v65 done up and had the hardest time with heads leaking. They tried milling on block and head and was told that they need time to "marry". I laughed myself. I haven't been able to find any threads on splitting cases. Is there anything I need to look for or do in the process or is it strait forward. I've also already purchased a cosmetic gasket set. Would it be a bad idea to use this?

Go to Basscliff's site and download a service manual to guide you through the process

Do a Search here on Cometic, there's been some bad experiences with them
