A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi, I am new to this board. Have been riding since 1965. Bought my first bike in 1970.
A 1982 GS1100G just found it's way into my garage after being in a wreck and going thru three other people first.
The ignition was wiped out during the wreck. Someone has installed a new set of pickups but there is no rotor or advance mechanism. Did this machine have a mechanical advance?
I have a Dyna III system I could put on it but it needs a mechanical advance to work according to the directions. If that is true, would an advance from another bike work? If yes, what models and years.
This is a great board. I have already found a lot of good information that I can use.

Thanks

Re: GS1100g ignition questions.

I dont believe the GS series from 1980 onwards retained the mechanical advance. Funny you should ask though as just this past weekend, I was curious about that same thing. I have a mechanical advance and breaker plate from a early 78 GS 850 and those same parts in a 79 Gs750. Their dimensions are the same. I fitted the mechanical advance and points breaker plate to an 85 GS1150. I am reasonably sure the crankshaft end on the 1150 and the 1100 is the same. So you could FOR SURE use the mechanical advance from a 79 or earlier GS 850 or the advance mechanism from a 77-79 750. I suspect that Suzuki would have made the crank ends such that the GS 650, 750, 850, and 1000 for the years of points ignition systems would all be the same and the same advance unit could be used. For most models, 1979 was the last year of mechanical advance units.

In some of Dyna's applications retrofitting the advance mech is required

I have one if you need it from 82 GS750 should work. they dropped the adv mech in 83 or 84
