    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1100G Valve guide & seals question

I am rebuilding a gs1100g motor to put into my GS1000gl. In the process, I was cleaning the valves and going to replave the valve seals. The valve seals that I have are a little rubber (synthetic) o'ring with a thin metal cap over it that I guess slides directly on the valve guide. I couldn't get the old ones off so the manual says to tap the valve guide out from the cylinder side out towards the cam side. I tride to do this (gently) with a punch and hammer and the guide just crumbled like very cheap pot metal. Now I don't know what to do. It doesn't seem like they were made to come out, yet the attached parts breakdown shows intake and output guides that are removable with an O'ring in a groove in the middle of the guide.....(items 2, 3, & 4)

I am really confused and frustrated at this point...any help Please!
 
Sorry to hear about all the problems.

The service manual leads one to believe that removing the valve guides is fairly trivial but this is not the case in reality. I didn’t know that they would crumble like you describe but I’d expect them to be hard and brittle. One other key thing related to the valve guides is that any time a guide is disturbed, the valve seat must be recut since the guide is the datum so to speak and the valve seat indexes relative to this.

In terms of the valve stem seals, they should pry off the end of the guide without all this drama. It might help to heat them up first since they are rubber. You also need to be careful not to knock on the guide since as you learned, the guides can be brittle.

I think at this point you should find a machine shop that can properly install a new guide and cut the valve seat. Have them install the valve stem seals also if you can’t figure out how to get the old ones off.

Remove valve stem oil seals with pliers, if you broke off the valve stems, you can buy new ones including the small clips that retain them in, but you will have to get a GOOD machine shop to put them in, near enough IMPOSSIBLE to do yourself.
To put the seals back in, I always find that a 10mm socket on a small extension bar then push down on the valve seal then tap LIGHTLY to seat the valve seal.

i prefer to use proper tools myself, but i've also heard people burn the valve seals til they carbonize and crumble

there are also tools for driving valve guides in and out and pre-heating the head helps removal/instalation
