    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1100GLZ - two problems

Thought I would start getting the bike ready for riding this year and found two problems - hopefully someone can help me.

Problem 1:
Pulled the oil drain plug (to change oil) - crankcase full of gas :eek:!!!! Found out that one of the floats was stuck open and drained the tank into the crankcase. I fixed the carb float, put everything back together, started it up, runs great, EXCEPT that it smokes like a chimney.

I read on another thread that fuel in the crankcase can cause this. I'm assuming that after draining/changing oil, there was still a small amount of gas in the crankcase, thus causing it to smoke. The questions here are:
a) Will this go away after a while?
b) Should I run it a while then change oil again?
c) Change it now before starting it again?

Problem 2:
When I pulled the oil drain plug, I noticed the threads in the crankcase are in bad shape/stripped - is it possible to "re-thread" the crankcase and put in a larger drain plug, and if so how hard of a job is this?

problem 1...

A. possibly yes, but what is the bikes history. did it have a history of smoking before?
did the bike sit a long time and the rings get stuck with varnish?
are the valve stem seals bad?

B. I would run it for 15-20 minutes then change the oil again, just to be sure you remove all the fuel.

C. same as above.

Problem 2...

yes you can install a larger drain plug.
But I don't know if an auto parts store will have a 1/2 oversize drain plug. take the drain plug you have with you to see what they can match up. then drain the oil, put grease on the new drain plug's threads and use it like a tap. clean the threads off and re-grease every so often to keep the metal shavings out of the engine. then re-install the new drain plug and re-fill with oil.

or replace the oil pan.

Did it have a history of smoking before?
No - first time this has ever happened

Did the bike sit a long time and the rings get stuck with varnish?
Sat in the garage (heated) over winter. No longer than any other winter season.

Are the valve stem seals bad?
Hmmm, not sure - any way to check without tearing down the engine?
 
Regarding the smoke, ride the bike for a while and see if it goes away. Regarding the oil, wouldn't hurt to change it a second time just to be safe. Diesel engine oil is good for motorcycles and costs no more than decent auto oil so that's a good way to go.
