GS1150 ES Makeover Project

Watching your project with interest, great commentary and phenomenal photos!
You a pro photographer by chance?
Curious, what camera are you using?

Great platform for a re-build looking forward to watching your progress.

Nice resto start. The slides on the later carbs seem to be a composite of some sort. Those look the same as the ones on my 85 750EF.

I'm pretty envious! Your hooked bad.......

Charlie - how right you are. I found myself bidding on some eBay bike bits for a bike I didn't even have (yet)! I have a fabulous wife who buys all her clothes from the charity (thrift) stores just so I can buy motorbike bits.

Greetings

The mirrors for the 1150es (f) are not the same as the 1000s. There are some still made that are pretty much identical to the 1150 fairing mirrors....
except for; the glass is not convex, they have studs instead of bolts, they come with a spacer block that is not required, and chinese.(at least the ones i got are)
they are on ebay periodically.
there are a couple in UK, here, although the seller claims NOS suzuki, (they may be, I'm not familiar with GSXR's).here,....http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-...49?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2a1bf0d2b9

derwood - thanks for that. I just purchased a set. They are cheap enough and look like they will fit straight on.

Carb Float Bowl Choke Delivery System Problem

Carb Float Bowl Choke Delivery System Problem

I will post this is the carb section too:

Got a bit of an issue on my 1150 ES carb float bowls. My experience of these Mikuni CV carbs is that the brass choke pick up tube inserts into a hollow section of the float bowl sides. This hollow is fed with fuel from the bowl through the arrowed hole. On all my GS1100 carbs, if you spray carb cleaner down the hollow (as in the pic below) it will exit through the arrowed hole. On these carbs from my 1150 ES none of the the 4 bowls allows any cleaner to pass through to this exit hole. These carb bowls have been cleaned and put in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Before I start to exert some pressure down these hollows in an attempt to clean them out, can anyone tell me that these bowls should work just like the ones on my GS1100? Or are they blocked for a purpose? The choke mechanisms look the same in both sets of carbs and I cannot see how the choke circuit would be fed with fuel if the bottoms of these hollows are purposefully blocked.

they'll fit,( the mirrors ) if you don't want to drill a hole in the fairing use the spacer block as an adapter and drill in it instead.

Hammer away man, that passage needs to be open. Filled with sludge no doubt.

Some Electrical Issues

Some Electrical Issues

For bigger hi-res photos visit my G1150ES Restoration Blog.

Discovered that I don't have a rectifier and the plug to connect one is knackered:

And that the fuse box is damaged with a burned out signal fuse holder (if indeed this fuse actually does service the signal lamps!) and we have a 25 amp Main fuse. That is sure to burn out the harness if anything goes wrong:

New parts on order (Nic - where art thou?).

Carb Needle Question

Carb Needle Question

So this bike was re-jetted with 150 mains and 50 pilots. Stands to reason that with out an airbox, this would have been done to adjust the mixture for a freer flowing air intake. Would it also follow that an extra washer was installed on the needle of the throttle slide? There are 2 on mine. I want to return it to stock. So do I remove one of them?

Carb Reassembly

Carb Reassembly

This has to be my most favourite task of all time. I love stripping, cleaning and assembling these beautiful pieces of history. This 30 year old set has come up looking like new with a paint strip, wash and ultrasonic clean. I have installed new jets (it was previously jetted for K&N filters) and put it back to stock. Thanks to Robert, I have all the little O rings. This set of carbs has a piece of hose linking the vent tubes so I now have a spare set of vent tube O rings! I love my job.

I just need to remove one of the 2 washers on the main throttle needle on the slides, put the slides back in and we are good to go back on the bike.

Then clean out the fuel tank, borrow a rectifier (from my other GS) and see if she runs. How much fun can you have with your clothes on?

Thanks for that. You gave me the confidence to really poke around in there. A paper clip did the trick. Took a while though because there is that restriction near the bottom of the hole that prevents easy access.

Job done

Greetings

Inexperienced carb people often times put washers under the needle clip thinking that will raise the needle and richen the mixture. In reality those extra washers do nothing, because needle height is managed by the thickness of the plastic spacer on top of the needle clip. When redoing carbs I typically sand down that spacer by .060" or so before putting it back in. That will richen the mixture just a smig and improve cold driveability.

Good luck.

You are up early there in CA!

Thanks for that tip - I will indulge in a little sanding before re-assembly.

Greetings
