I know that this bike is not covered on this site, but I did receive a lot of help from everybody here so just wanted to say thanks and try post up some pics.

Don't worry, I reckon those 500's belong here as they're still an air cooled GS

You may have also noticed there's a 500 cafe/streetfighter build active in the Projects section too

Thanks, apparently the bottom end is the same as the GS450 so it's part of the family I guess. I did see that project, it's great. I'm always impressed with the amount of work some guys put into their bikes.

Yup, I believe there's a whole lot there that's common.

There is. As I mentioned in my introductory posts, I am using the 450 ignition and charging system as this bike had had all those parts scavenged at some point. What you cannot do however (without resorting to pretty involved fabrication) is exchange the motors, due to the different head design the exhaust ports come out against the frame.

Well... in theory yes... however there is at least one member on here who has accomplished putting a 500 engine in his 450 by doing some fancy pipe bending

A very nice refurb sir. well done! Those are good sturdy little bike IMHO. I'm keeping my eyes open as I'm thinking that be one of my next projects. My Insurance coverage on the 750 runs out next year as my insurer will only cover bikes to age 30, I' also finding it a tad heavy and more power than I really need so a change to something newer and smaller will likely be in order.

Thanks, yes I must say, I'm really loving the bike. I have a Honda VFR750 and a Yamaha SR250 so it has some very stiff competition, but it fits the gap between the two perfectly. As regards the motor swap, that other thread is really interesting, I would have spent 6 months chopping and welding the frame!!!:lol:

I thought those 500's were mega cool when they came out here, I considered getting one, but it was not suitable for me at the time.
So you do know that the SR250 will make the perfect Cafe.......just sayin'

Thanks. I didn't post up any build pics, in case I never managed to finish it! :lol: Not too sure about going the cafe route with an SR, as lovely as they are the thing is so slow that any kind of sporty look would just look rediculous IMHO. I do really like the old school scrambler/flat-tracker look though.

That's BIGYAM's 450/500 tracker from over in the UK... it's the thread I point everyone to when they say you can't put a 500 in a 450 frame

Dang that is one hot bike. Looks just like an updated 650 tracker. Me likely long time.

A very nice job on that and as my old man used to say, "when there's a will, there's a way".

I wish I could bend pipe or otherwise knock up some headers. That would be the only thing holding me back on a project like that.
