DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gs550 ??? Carb id

xkaes

Forum Mentor
I need some help identifying a bank of carbs.

Here's a picture with two banks. The bottom bank is the same as from my '77 & '78 GS550's.

The top bank was given to me as a bank that will fit my two bikes. (The top bank does not have the tops attached)

Both banks look exactly the same to me EXCEPT that the top bank is missing the orifice marked by the red asterisks on the lower bank.

All the manuals I have for the GS550 show the extra orifice.

The top bank looks like they have been cleaned, but what GS bike are these designed for? California? Canada? A different GS???

Either you forgot to attach the pictures or it's something on my end...

There's no picture showing but i guess one set have a kidney shaped orifice at around the 10 O'clock position and the others don't.
The ones without are 24mm and the ones with are 22mm..

Sorry about that. I've added it.

The orifice on the airbox side of the carbs is the same on both -- 35mm ID & 40mm OD.

The orifice on the engine side of the carbs is the same on both -- 25mm ID & 30mm OD.

As zed stated, one set are VM24's (most likely from a Kawasaki KZ650) and the other set are VM22's (both Suzuki and Kawasaki used those those.)

OK. I assume that the 22mm and 24mm refers to the diameter of the throttle valve, correct?

I guess I'll put together the VM24mm carbs and list them on EBAY. They look nice and clean, but I can't use them -- my bikes use the VM22mm.

THANKS!!

22mm or 24mm is the diameter of the venturi ( carb bore measured at the slide) .
The 24's are better carbs and would work well on your 550.

Well that's even better news. I guess the guy that gave them to me knew they would work. I had assumed they wouldn't!

Thanks even more!
