A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi everyone, I've just picked up a 1985 GS550 which is running perfectly but unfortunately the previous owners watched too many episodes of American Chopper decided to hack the rear section of the frame off...

I'm thinking the easiest thing to do would be to buy an earlier frame as I prefer them, and fit the engine and running gear from my bike to it

SO I guess what I'm asking is are all of the GS550 engines the same size and interchangeable between years?

8-valve and 16-valve engines are completely different. I suppose you could make one fit the other if you had the appropriate skills.

hmmmm, back to square one then. Do you think that the late 8v would be a straight fit into an earlier UK frame?

If you're in the UK, that makes things easier. Not much difference between the various years of 8-valve engine. Lack of kickstart on later models, transistorised ignition as opposed to points, VM versus CV carbs. Might be some other bits, but as far as actually mounting the engine, should go straight in.

Make sure you don't get an 'L' frame - there are some small differences.

Just beware that with the late 550s, 82 onwards, although the engines bolt straight in, had a different, to earlier models, tank, side panels, seat and rear cowling. The frame was changed and those bits won't swap over without a lot of mucking about.

Thanks, I prefer the look of the earlier bikes so might see if I can find a complete-ish donor
