DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550 - reinstalling the engine

Bought my GS550 in bits and the engine 'stuff' in a paper bag. Doesn't seem to be much info in the book about what goes where. I haved used the longest bolt across the back of the engine with a triangular thingy at either end (these have captive nuts) and the spacer on the left hand end of the bolt. I have done the same at the front of the engine (no spacer). The medium bolt simply goes through at the back of the engine. The one triangular thingy with no captive nuts I have used on the right hand side of the engine and I guess the bolts either side with the elongated pointy washers go on the inside of the frame - does the point face upwards into the 'box' section on the engine to stop it rotating? Also I notice that the bolts that go into the triangular peices with captive nuts are of two different lengths. Are there other brackets fixed by some of the longer bolts that I have not used yet?

Sounds like you've the long bolts and big spacer correct. And yes, the 'pointy washer' goes point up - can be a little fiddly to locate. The bolts that connect the engine brackets to the frame are the same on each bracket, but vary from bracket to bracket, if that makes sense.

So - rear bracket - M8 x 55
centre bracket - M8 x 16
front brackets - M8 x 60

If you have longer bolts, it may be that the bike had crash-bars or something at one time. Be careful when you install the engine - if a PO has installed longer bolts for some reason, it's possible to crack cases when you go to tighten them.

Thanks. I'll do my usual bolt replacement with SS Allen bolts (and the vital copper based grease!) Got to to agree with the fiddly to locate - I've got bad RSI in some fingers, think it it might be easier if I turn the bike upside down!!

I have always installed the "pointy washers" (they're actually nuts) with the point down. :-k

I hold them in place with some needle-nose pliers, then turn the bolt so they engage. The point is designed to be caught on the engine case to prevent turning. Starting in the down position is fine.

WOW Steve, you get everywhere!!! thanks for this info.

Could you tell me what size bolts i need to attach the brackets to the frame (as opposed to the bracket to the engine).

Thanks mate! I may have to ride down to Cornwall and shake your hand

Before you install the lower left engine bolt that connects to the triangle shaped nut, ensure the bolt is not too long and does not touch the engine case after it goes through the nut as it'll punch a hole into the case, I know of what I speak unfortunately.

Good luck with your wrenching.

David.
