    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gs550b Piston Rings

I have a new set of standard pistion rings for the 550. Before I install them is there anything I need to do in preparation. i.e. is there a ridge at the top of the bore that needs to be removed, or whatever. Or can I just remove the old and install the new?

Check you bores to make sure that they are within spec. and don't need to be rebored. I would at least re-hone the cylinder walls if the bores are indeed within specification.

It is essential to measure ring end-gap. Put the ring in the bore (press it in with the piston until the ring grooves disappear) and measure with a feeler guage the gap between each end of the ring. The spec should be in your manual. You can file the ring if the gap is too small with a FINE file. Make it right....not enough end gap and you'll probably sieze your motor.

Also make sure your compression rings are put in the proper order, with the proper edge facing up. Both top and bottom compression rings are different. This should also be in your manual. During installation make sure the "gapped" portion of your rings are not directly above on another when you slide them into the bores.
 
Thanks Mark. Will there be a ridge at the top of the bore. And will this need to be removed. If the ridge if there will it break the top ring if it is not removed.

There is no way to know if there is going to be a ridge until you take the cylinder off. The cylinders pull off from the top so the ridge, if there is one, will not hinder disassembly.

As Mark said, have the cylinders measured. If there is a ridge you can measure how much.

I'd definitely hone first and pull the head apart to check the valves and replace the valve stem seals. It's well worth the effort to do the job right.
