A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550L - are 1983 & 1985 carbs the same??

Can I use the same carbs for either an "83 or "85 engine??

I downloaded a manual that appears to be for 1983 (and up?) for my 1985 550L. I've completely disassemblied the carb to dip, & the model (ID) number of the carb is not the one called out in manual. It's also jetted different.

Manual sez... #43510 Mikuni carb (2-barrel)
Actual iz... #43610 Mikuni carb (2-barrel)

I would like to know what the REAL carb & specs are for my 1985 (mfg. 10/84).

is this a question of jetting?

if it is check out bikebandit for hte model year

the jet size is noted in the fiche

alpha sports will let you have the actual suzuki parts number in order to cross reference so that may be a better route

Jetting options are different in 85 and possibly other years

a 90 main jet

The fiche for California specific carb config so the bodies while the same may look oddly different with crazy piping and have crazy leaner jets for California

Mufflers all appear to be the same for all years so i guess the US models all had a California approved silencer

My Canada spec model has 100 and 105 main jets and a pipe that is not stamped with US EPA approval

Thanks guys - the 83 & 85 carbs are NOT the same. Also, the "L" model carbs are different than the "E" and "ES" ones of the same year; again different jets.

I have the carb specs for an "85 GS550L, and will post them shortly on the carb spec sticky.

BTW - I used a spray penetrating oil called "PB Blaster" on the cylinder side intake boot screws to get at the air tube O-rings. Worked suprisingly well, all broke loose quickly. My o-rings were flat & brittle & I'm sure were leaking air. Just another issue fixed, on the road to several more!
