    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS650 GL Oil pan bolt thread count

Hello all, does anyone know or know where I can find, the thread count on the oil pan bolt of a gs650gl?

For clarification Im talking about the bolt that you remove to drain the oil from the oil pan. The previous owner of my bike stripped the $hit out of the oil pan threads and I am debating repairing the threads or just replacing the pan itself.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
 
it's an odd size. you could source out another pan like I did, or you can use one of those self tapping oil plugs they sell, which I also did before I got the replacement.

The oil drain plug on a GS450 is just spark plug thread. I threaded mine into a head to make sure. So it's 14mm X whatever. I can't see how a 650 drain plug would be different, but?.if it has a 17mm head it's probably just spark plug and that's easy to source a helical or insert for. Probably the most commonly stripped thread in the world.
 
The head is 21mm. You can find self tapping drain plugs of the same diameter, but the thread pitch is wrong. Check bassclif's site for the tutorial on stripped pan plug thread repair
 
14 X 1.5 - weld a bead around it and cut new threads or just make it 3/8 NPT and use brass pipe end from hardware store.
 
It's 14mm diameter X 1.25mm thread pitch, same as a 14mm spark plug.

This actually makes things a bit easier, since there are plenty of thread inserts available for spark plugs that will work well for oil pan threads. Use a quality solid insert instead of a heli-coil.
