    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS650 with Dyna S

I bought a 1982 GS650 with Dyna S. It's not running, so I cleaned the carburetors, checked the compression. I don't see the Dyna S diagram for GS650, so I tried to use the diagram for GS550 and it doesn't work. I tried to swap the coil 1-4,2-3 and it has some sign of starting. Using the starting fluid with open throttle and it could start for about 1 or 2 seconds then die. They all have sparks but not that strong. Any suggestion? Should I use hotter spark plugs? Replace the coil?
 
Avoid that starting fluid,cuz it doesn't tell you much . Take off the signal generator cover- right side 4 inch diameter cover- and confirm you have a Dyna setup; also remove tank and check coils to see if they are stock.Lots of folks on here have the Dyna setup ,so tell them what you got and you'll get good advice. Is this a chain drive gs650? Follow the link to Basscliff's site (or wait till he stirs and finds you) to get you going. Troubleshooting is a step by step affair, avoid multiple "solutions" at same time.
 
What are your voltages at the battery and coils when cranking? When was the last time the carbs were properly disassembled, cleaned, put back together with new orings, and synched? Do you have the stock airbox back on? Running pods?
 
Brand new battery fully charged by 2 amp charger. Carbs just cleaned 2 days ago. It currently has pods with shimps inside to block 40-50% of air. Cover is off, that's why I know it's Dyna. Coils are original. Shaft drive. Thanks for replies.
 
Problem is most likely related to your monkey business about the carbs and pods. If you have spark the Dyna S is doing it's job. You might want to check voltage at the coils like cowboy/Scott suggested to make sure the spark is strong.

Voltage is about 8-9v at coil. I've heard about coil mod, do you have any info?

There is (or was) a clutch safety switch in left hand switch- but you said it was cranking, so this must be ok; there's nothing there connecting to coils. I would think that 9 volts to coils is too low, so start cleaning connections. Basscliff's site has good info- take advantage.
 
I didn't say the switch has problem, I just ask if he left switch on the diagram refer to the clutch safety switch. It has good sparks now. I wonder if anybody has a good diagram for GS650 Dyna S setup?

They're all the same.
 
What I did was I followed the instructions of the GS550 then swap the sparkplug caps. 1,4 to 2,3 and tune it. With lots of patients to have it run right. Put brand new gas in, choke on, and it runs.
