If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

The bike is a 85 GS700E. Will start and run(Finnally), but anything more than just light throttle inputs causes it to bog down. It is very cold natured as is, and right now I wouldn't say it's ridable. Any clues as to where to start? Carb? Plugs? I bought this bike from my father-in-law several years ago. The guy who owned it before him used to drag race this bike. I was told that the motor was "highly tuned", but who's to say what that means. I have no idea what, if anything, has been done to the motor. I actually suspect it is stock, but I could be wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, start with yer basic tune-up stuff:
Check valves.
Replace plugs, check plug caps/coils.
Clean carbs.
Check for intake leaks.
Check air filter(s).
Check battery/charging system.
New gas (if you haven't already).

GS700s are very cold natured with stock jetting, so that's no surprise. Of course we don't know if your bike is stock.

It's probably time to do some searching around these forums and Google and read up on your bike to see exactly what you've got. You'll find lots of info in the archives here. First take the time to check the basics, then if you still have issues, we can go from there.

thanks for the advice. I've been out fiddleing with it all morning. It hasn't been ridden much in the last year(been workin on it) so it may just need a good carb cleaning. I'll do some checking here though, and see what I can find out. Thanks again.

I think a good outside indicator of whether or not its 'hopped up' is the exhaust. A modified bike would not be running the stock exhaust. Its hard to tell, but your avitar pic sure looks like the bike's got the original dual exhaust on there.

As t3 said, you will need to go through the basics. I would think your problem is most likely dirty carbs/intake leaks. There probably won't be a silver bullet that gets it going again right away. Then again, buy yourself a case of the Silver Bullet, spend a weekend in the garage cleaning and checking, and most likely you'll have her going.

yes, it's the stock exhaust. That's why I said I thought the motor might be stock. I agree with you on that for sure. I have managed to get it to run better, but not great. I dont have the tools to synch the carbs myself, so I think I'll run it to a nearby shop and have them go through the carbs for me, and take it from there. Thank you for your input. It is greatly appreciated.

DO not try to tune it without the complete airbox installed & sealed !!!

T3 and SDL give good info.

Getting a bike started and running right is a straightforward exercise but yes things do go off the rails and you can run into odd ball things that are difficult to figure out...but you will get it sorted if you go about it methodically.

First read all the threads on hard starting , poor running, carbs etc. There is a ton and its all good stuff. It will give you a good insight into all the potential issues.

Use the T3 list and go at it step by step. Since it does start but doesn't run I'd concentrate on the valves and cleaning and synching the carbs. Likely, most of your problems will be found there. Drop in new plugs and with a good battery I'll bet you get her running and idling nicely. As SDL mentions It won't go without an airbox or filters in place.....keep it in mind.

Step by step and you will get it sorted.

Good luck with it.

Cheers,
Spyug
