I have a 81gs850g and I'd like to swap the carbs. What is a good swap for this bike? It has the vacuum secondaries on it which work fine. I'm tryin to get a little more oomph outta of this bike.

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

There are no "secondaries" on the carbs.
About the only performance upgrade is to remove the engine and slide a 1000G or 1100G engine in its' place.
If you were looking for a rocket-fast bike, you chose the wrong one.
The 850 is a great bike (have had up to four here at the same time, still have two), but "quick" it's not.

Isn't the engine just a bored 750 in a 1000 frame? And you wouldn't know anyone with a set of intake manifold boots would you?

Ok thank you for your help. Its my first bike. I bought the bike in pieces almost have it back together. I'd like to swap the stock pipes out with something not so quiet. Any.suggestions? Also the rear turn signals... How do they attach? They came in a box with a long bolt through them and I've tried to attach them to the spot on the frame but it don't look right. Am I missing a bracket? The start button don't work either and I just installed new solenoid. Only paid 400 for bike. Sorry to rattle on but you seem to know your stuff.

My suggestion would be to enjoy the quiet. Loud pipes do more to damage motorcyclists' reputation than they do to alert nearby traffic.
Possibly, as there is a bracket involved. That bracket is part numbers 25 and 26 in this parts diagram:
Did you pull the clutch lever? There is a "safety" switch there that many of us bypass.
Sounds good, but please don't use that as an excuse for not buying stuff for the bike. Too many times, we will mention that some part needs to be changed or we might recommend a particular tool. The response is "but that's more than I paid for the bike". Rather than use the bike's price as an excuse, think of it as saving money on the purchase so you can better afford the things you need to get it back on the road safely.

The GS850G is one of the (if not THE) heaviest production bikes that Suzuki built. As Steve said, quick it is not. But powerful it is.
If it's not even running yet, how do you know it needs more 'oomph'?
The general consensus of the collective here is to get your bike-in-a-box running and running well in stock form first, by performing all those maintenance items that the previous owners ignored. Then if you want to diddle with it, at least you're starting from a working machine.
It's your bike, you're welcome to modify it however you like. But know this - any combination of airbox/filter/carburetor/exhaust modifications can send you down a long frustrating path to get the jetting right. It's much worse if the bike is already a basket case.

Also get thee to Cliff's website for a whole lot of technical info. Read, read, read the technical posts on this forum and heed the advice from our resident gurus. It will put you on the path to GS nirvana.....
