    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS850 Exhaust...

Hello everyone. Brand new owner of an 82 GS850gl here.

I'm wondering about the exhaust. Specifically, how there are 6 holes coming out the back of each pipe, but 3 of them of plugged up on each (see picture). My understanding from the guy who sold me the bike is that these were plugged up due to the import/emissions laws at the time.

My question is: Can I drill these out and then install the Dynojet stage 3 jet kit (that was included with the bike in a box) to balance out the fuel/air mixture and get a few more horses out the the engine?
 
Humm, haven't seen a GS muffler like that before where some holes are open and others closed. Usually it's either or. Wonder if someone drilled three of them open? Drilling out the others don't do anything other than make more noise and mess up your carburetion.
 
^^^ What he said. Also, you won't gain enough (if anything) to justify the bother of fixing the carburetion.
 
My wife's bike has stock pipes on it, only the CENTER hole is open.

Yeah, the "L" pipes sound a bit "motorboat-y", but drilling holes makes it sound much worse.

If you want more sound, get a 4-into-1 or an aftermarket 4-into-2. Either way, you will likely need to re-jet. If you do just the pipe(s), a Stage 1 will probably do, but if you also change to pods on the intake, you WILL need the Stage 3.

Mine have been drilled...

My GS850 has been drilled on all 6 holes by a previous owner..
It is louder , and pops a bit on deceleration ..
It isn't too terrible, but I am going to figure a way to plug them back up.
Although mine are not drilled the entire diameter of the entry as is yours...the holes in my pipes are centered (nearly perfectly) and 1/2 the diameter of the exit size...
