So long story short I was unfortunate accident with my bike after a couple of months I started to fix her. After finally getting the bike to start she is only running on 2 cylinders just 2+3. I have spark on all four. It is also backfiring out of the exhaust really bad. I can't figure out why is ran really good before the accident. Also I'm not sure if because my rear diff locked up is what caused my accident and the sudden stop of the engine could of messed something up? Thank you.

"Also I'm not sure if because my rear diff locked up is what caused my accident and the sudden stop of the engine could of messed something up? "

Please describe what happenned (the accident)as best you can...... What year is this gs850? What side did you go down on?

post your location - there might be a member nearby who might help.

I'm located near sturbridge mass. And my accident accured on my way home from work one day I was cruising at about 40 mph and all of a sudden my rear tire locked up and I was wet out my bike slid out of control and went down on the right side of the bike as well as throwing me off like a bowling pin. After some research I found out the rear diff locked up. It's a 81 gs850g

Off hand it sounds like you've lost power via the coils, maybe you cracked the coil and it's arcing out. Or the points/electronic ignition has been damaged under the side cover.

If the electronic ignition was bad would it even start at all?

I also had to replace my cdi after the accident for some reason it fried.

Wow, no fun! Sounds like the secondary drive gears failed/locked up., but more likely the rear wheel spline destroyed itself and locked up. Have you had rear tire off, ever?

the ignitor (not a cdi) has twin circuits - one fires 1 and 4, other fires 2 and 3. Since you went down on right side, the wiring from signal coils to ignitor might be damaged, but since all four plugs are firing....... Have a look at the signal coils .

Ya I pulled it all apart and had to replace the rear diff. Now when I check the signal coils what am I looking for? Do I check them with a ohm meter?

Did you damage the right side round engine cover and any components underneath? (signal generator and crank trigger)

If signal cover seems undamaged, and all 4 plugs are firing, not clear why 1 and 4 cylinders ain't delivering. Run it a bit on 2 and 3 and pull spark plugs on 1 and 4 - wet or dry?

I verified that plugs are correct. I ran it for a bit and plugs on 1 and 4 are dry. What color should the spark be? Blue correct? The spark on 1 and 4 are white and when the bike is running the exhaust on those gets warm but that's it.

Since bike was horizontal dancing during your pumpkin misadventure, maybe the 1 and 4 float pins shifted/locked in their mounts and aren't letting the floats drop to refill the bowls. Unlikely but ......

I took apart the carbs to clean and check them just in case and all seems good. I'm stumped. Now seeing how I fried my cdi is it possible that is messed up my coils or igniter?

Is it possible that you connected you fuel line to one of the vent T's? 3 things are needed to run, fuel, air and spark. You have 2 of them on 1&4, try turning your pilot screws out a turn or two on those carbs..

Checked to make sure fuel line was connected properly and it was. Also adjusted the pilot screw and no luck. I let it run for a long time and did notice 1 and 4 were getting hot now but not as hot as 2 and 3. I pulled the plug wire off of 4 when it was running and it made no difference which confused me on why that cylinder was hot.

One thing you need to work on is vocabulary. :-k

Your bike does NOT have a "CDI". NO GS has a "CDI".

What many people MISTAKENLY call a "CDI" is the IGNITOR, which is just a box full of transistors that replaces the mechanical points.

You say you have spark on all four cylinders, there is nothing apparently wrong with the electrical side of this puzzle.

You mentioned that the outer plugs were dry, that would lead me to think there is no gas getting there.

Could be as simple as a carb (mis-)sync, might be jammed floats from the "horizontal dancing" that someone else mentioned.
