    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS850 no spark 2&3

Hey Everybody, Last year I bought a 1981 GS850 in really nice condition with 8,000 miles. The bike has no spark on plugs 2 and 3 and when the problem occured the PO parked it an it's sat for 7 or 8 years in a shed.

I got the carbs all cleaned up and back on the bike but i can't get it to even run on just the two cylinders so i'm really at a loss on how to test or diagnose the problem...

I am a novice with just basic engine knowledge so any help/ideas would be appreciated!

Hi Mr. bboystyle24,

The #2 and #3 plugs are fired by the right coil (as you sit on the bike). The coils are under the fuel tank. Check connections and voltages. Look in the electrical section of my little website for more information. Let's hope you do not have a failed igniter. One time I lost spark on #1 and #4 (fired by the left coil) and found this: Simple Coil Repair (PDF file).


Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

You need to start by breaking the carbs down and cleaning them fully. A simple going over with a bike thats sat that long wont do it. They need to be disassembled and soaked in Chemdip over night and then sprayed out with Carb cleaner and compressed air and the rubber viton Orings replaced with new (available at www.cycleorings.com for about $20 shipped) Once youve done that, you'll either, from the sound of it, be replacing the right side coil, (fires 2-3 cylinder) or the ignitor (not cheap, better swap to a Dyna S ignition...)
 
Thanks for the advice guys! It's slow going with me but the bike is in such good condition cosmetically that I have to fix it right. you say the right coil fires 2 and 3? thats not the way it's set up currently?? hmmm.... and any adivce on where to look for a Dyna S ignition?

You may wish to hook up your wires correctly. My guess is bad pickup coil.

wait a minute lost spark ignition. What you describe is unpossible. What wires are going where at present?

If 1 and 4 have spark and are wired wrong then both coils are firing.
Am I right guys?

It's 1-4 and 2-3 on the coils
 
Hi,

We have come to realize that there is nothing impossible for a previous owner, hereby known as "PO". It may be that the PO has switched some wiring around while trying to get it running again. Get a wiring diagram from my website and put things back the way they're supposed to be.
