A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So my bike got obliterated while parked by a truck and I have to replace the whole front end. I'm wondering what other years and models are compatible with the GS850L(T)

I'm not 100% certain, but I think the only thing you need to watch out for is to make sure you get the forks from another L model. The Axle is in front of the fork tubes, not at the end. Keep track of what you get. The forks look the same from year to year, but the internals change.

If you find it will work, or you can't find better, I have a triple tree from an '83 850 GL, and a set of chronically leaky '80 forks. Rust pits in the chrome wear the left seal out in about 4000 miles. PM me if you think you can use them. Better ones do turn up on ebay, that's how I replaced mine.

Edit: Come to think of it, I have all of that '83 front end, except turn signals. The headlight chrome isn't great, but might clean up. The wheel is an '83, so the spokes won't match your rear wheel. I put my indicator on it before disassembly, so I know it's straight within service limits. One of the rotor bolts is broken off. A good shop should be able to get it out without having to repair the thread. I do have the matching rear wheel, but it's bent. The '83 fork tubes look grim, but I never tried to clean them up.

The 1000GL and 1100GL forks will work as well as 850 forks, so you can use this information and expand your search.

Good luck and sorry to hear about this problem.

Good to hear a 1000 or 1100 front end would work too. Hell of a time to be taken off the road but I'm just thankful I wasn't on her when the truck decided to use her as a speed bump.
