    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys,

I'm having a bit of trouble finding out about the type of stator that will fit my 1981 gsx 400f . . . ive done a bit of searching and reading and there seems to be a lot of talk about 12 and 18 pole stators (and a lot of confusion).

I was just going to go for the Ricks Motorsport OEM suzuki 18 pole stator, can anyone confirm this will be fine?

Any recommendations on an R/R unit that is compatible with this?

Sorry if im beating a dead horse. My model always gets overlooked in resources, makes it a bit trickier (aided by my lack of knowledge)
 
I admit to know very little about electrics here. but my what i would do is take the cover off, look and measure the stator, make sure it will fit the new one. then make sure you have the same amount of wires coming off the stator as the replacement. If they look the same and have the same wires chances are they are the same. Kool aid Kid would know though.
 
Yes, pull cover off and take a peek- some 400 models used a magneto style system like you'd find on a dirt bike. You could attempt to find the R/R (rectifier/regulator) on the bike, cuz this would be a clue to the charging system used. Don't order anything till you are sure, as companies hate taking back electrical goodies.

Looks like yours is the same model as mine, the G1. You will need to save your rubber gasket that goes over the wiring to stop the oil leaking from the stator cover and re-use it. Pretty simple to do, just cut the old stator wires right beside the gasket and pull them through.

$115.50 plus postage, and from memory I got mine overnight and it seems to be holding up well.

For an R/R, I found it was cheaper to just get one locally off eBay here and I got a Shindengen for a Kawasaki (SH530-12K) for about $60 plus postage. Shipping from the US seems to have started to increase quite a lot lately, so for one little R/R I found it prohibitive...

My charging system's never been better...

Surely they would have used the same stator in similar models whether it be the gs450 or the gsx400 or the gsx400f.... who can be sure though :P

but your bike is a four cylinder...? You might visit BassCliffs site or parts fiches online to cross reference with other bikes that have stators that look like yours...be careful. That ebay one you posted doesn't actually show you what you are buying. But Pete's Electrex World DOES.

Pete, you are a legend. Thankyou! :D I'm still a little unsure what you mean about the rubber gasket but I think my mechanic will know.

I was going to get my mechanic to do this job once i sourced the part (as he is a gs nut and knows so much).... or is it simple enough to do myself? electrical has always overwhelmed me a little, although i think im starting to get around it.
 
There's my old dodgy stator and the rubber grommet (grommet is a better term than gasket in this case) is where the wires are passing through the side of the stator cover.

wow thanks for that Pete!
Although just from a quick check out the other day the stator wires seemed to run though the starter motor box internally so hopefully its just as straightforward as that.
 
Cool... I think the early 400's and 425's may be the same as that actually, on mine they just go straight out, through a groove behind the sprocket cover, and up to the harness.
