GSXR suspension upgrades!

Hey folks,

I have an 82 GS1100E; 62,600 miles...all original/looks good, runs well, too. Bought it with 32K on the odo, and did 20K on it the first year I had it. Found some info that early gixxer suspension bolts straight up to these GS's, with minor mods to the gsxr swing arm (1/8" shaved off each end of the mounting pivot). Well I scored a complete suspension set up off an 88 GSXR 1100 for 500.00. Good deal?? I hope so. Includes forks, triple trees, rims front and rear, brakes and mounting hardware for them, axles, spacers, ad nauseum, ad nauseum, ad nauseum. Have seen the stuff in pics, and is all in very clean, solid shape. Even have all the info needed to have shock mounts welded in the proper place (new progressive rear shocks will be mounted), and steering stops too. Anything specific I should watch out for/be aware of? I know the bike will turn quicker, but will there be any new instablity in a given area when I ride more aggressively at all? I am typical not aggressive at all, but like to push the bike here & there when in familiar terrotry. Going from 19 in. front/17 in. rear to 18 in in front and back. Any frame bracing needed for extra stability/rigidity or anything like that? No power upgrades yet, just the suspension and stuff.

I have the same bike, and I want to do the same thing, except I want to use 17" wheels. Where did you find the donor parts?
I have been reading pages and pages of this site, and from what I can gather ride height, and geometry are the things you should watch for. I read all 30 something pages of Katman's upgrade, and all of "Test1" stuff until he vanished. I am still reading more and more. The 82 GS1100 has pretty non-aggressive geometry, so you can toy around and be pretty safe. I think someone said to watch the chain as it might try to saw through the swingarm if you raise the rear.
I'm interested in seeing how your suspension swap goes, so let me (us) know.

I've got the 85 1150 front suspension on mine and it's nicer than the 82. I like the clipons and such. The 88 suspension sounds like it may be better with the newer technology and all. Mine uses the old gauges not the 85 gauges. Are you mounting the fairing on too? Also are you going to go with rearsets? What are the differences with the swingarm? Sorry about the Q and A but it sounds like a cool project. 8) Have fun now cuz I know you will later. :twisted:

Im running 92 Inverted Gixer front end, Major diferance in handling, and for the rear I used a 92 Katana GSF750, had to change the rear wheel bearings and go for the 530 chain conversion
