DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

anyone ever use this stuff, and are there any ill side effects. going to do this tomorrow unless you guys tell me otherwise.

It's OK, doesn't do a whole lot. The purple power stuff works much better.
yea i saw that stuff too and almost got it. ill try the gunk and see how it works vs returning it. wont eat rubber will it

No I don't think so, but any of them may damage paint if left on very long.

Make sure u get the "gel" works OK. But a sting solution of dawn dish detergent and vinegar works good for me

.

Suzuki makes thier own engine degreaser and it pretty good stuff. If you have heavy caked on crap, use fast orange hand cleaner and squish it in between the fins and corners with a mechanics parts brush.

We have stuff called simple green here in Canada , or Spray nine , both works good , and if you can rinse off with hot water even better i find, i
have had great luck with these products, but not sure if you have in the States, Brian

thanks for the tips, and yes we have spray nine here. i used to sell a ton of it when i worked at an automotive parts house. forgot all about it until now. it seems like vinegar is used to clean everything on these forums. will have to try it out

"Awesome" cleaner from Dollar Tree- I just did a Holley 2280 for a neighbor- 29 years old and used only the awesome as a dip- amazing stuff for the price- a dollar a 20 oz jug.
It will tear your hands up so use gloves. It's yellow in color with a clear bottle.

I wouldn't use it.
I have learned from using it not to use it.
It's very effective as far as breaking down the grease and grime, one of the harsher, better degreasers out there. Where it falls short with me is it will dry out the clear coat protection on your aluminum cases and wheels.
Over time and not very long your clear coat will start to yellow and then dry out to the point where you can use your fingernail and scrape the coating off, exposing a shiny bright aluminum finish underneath.

I use simple green and a brush now, doesn't work as well, but not as harsh. Do to the effects of the gunk I've removed most of the dried out clear coat with steel wool. But you have to do it often to keep them shiny.

Can't really see it but this clutch cover case is yellowed and powdered, I haven't polished it out because I want to save that little 997CM decal. Keep that stuff off your chain if you have an O ring chain.

You can cut it to appropriate strength. I never use it on clear coat- my carbs lost clear long ago.

Yes 50/50 dawn is the degreaser and the vinegar acidy for the hard stuff...let sit for a bit

I like Gunk SC. The stuff you mix with kerosene. The Gunk makes it water soluble, so it rinses off after you use it. Probably not environmentally friendly, I haven't used it in a few years. It does last a long time, and its relatively inexpensive. It isn't anywhere near as hard on paint rubber and aluminum as the purple power. I do use the heck out of that too though. Purple Power and Castrol purple cleaner are amazing on concrete, and greasy clothing as well as greasy grime.

i have used Gunk SC mostly on sand cast British motors that are cast with alloys that stand up pretty well to environmental exposure. Die cast alloys tend to stand up less well to the environment, and usually are clear coated. I'm not certain how Gunk SC would work on that, but its mostly kerosene after you mix it, and I doubt that kerosene, which is a thin paraffin, is very hard on the clear coat. I think the clear coat fails over time anyway. I bought a nearly no mileage 1980 GS850G with perfect clear coat. Now it has 11000 miles, and the clear coat is failing like every other old GS just about. It has never had any degreaser on it to my knowlege, as it has never leaked. I think age was the major culprit, not products.
