Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If there's fuel present in the vacuum line then your petcock is bad and you should replace it. See my last post below. There's a thin diaphragm in the petcock and if it gets a tear or even a pinhole leak it can send fuel down the vacuum line straight into your #2 carb. Of course it will go from there either into your cylinder or into the airbox (or both).

If you have any signs of fuel in the vacuum line, make sure you check your oil for signs of gasoline infiltration and change if necessary. Also make sure #2 cylinder isn't full of fuel before you next try to start the bike or hydro-lock is going to give you a bad day...

thanks guys thats what i thought, !!
have to get a new kit for that,,
thanks again

Where are you? After you have this petcock issue figured out I could come by and help with the final tune. I've collected all the stuff necessary to finish it off. (Carb sync tool, valve adjust tools, extra shims, float bowl adaptor to check fuel height via the hose method, etc...)

I'm in Northbrook which is about 20 miles from the WI border near the lake.

since i have the bike running, i will recheck the cam gaps see if they have changed , i have a real nice feeler gauge from a transmission that will work great there they will go from #3 all the way up to 15,
im going for 8 on exhaust and 5 intake

Are you saying you are going to set the exhaust valve clearances to .008" ?

And the intake valve clearances to .005" ?

Hi,

Knowledge is power.

CLICK HERE and read every link and every page. Start with the READ ME.

OK, you don't have to read ALL of the factory manuals for every GS motorcycle. But you can download a complete factory manual for your 850 while you're there. Read all of the other "how to" guides and all of the 'odd and ends' sections, etc.

This was all given to you in your "mega-welcome" in THIS THREAD. Perhaps you missed it.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

well checked the tappets again .
they are .004 all but 1 -#2 intake is .005
book called for 3- 8 so this is good to go and im real happy that
the compression hot is 145 in all but 1 cyl # 2 at 135 +
i have fixed the petcock issue , but the bike still doesnt idle below 3 grand.
i must believe that the carbs need to be set and syc which is more than i can do , if this was a race car carb setup, i could do those ,, bike ??
as for me setting the cams at 5 int and 8 on exhaust , if i can get the bike running great i will tinker with those #s
have done this on my race car and found 20 hp figured might try it out on this bike see if something there?? idono?? sounds good
take the bike in next couple days see what the x racer can do with it

I'm not seeing how leaving intake side clearances tight and exhaust side loose is gonna do a bit of anything really but no matter there.
If it's not running below 3 grand your pilot circuit is still clogged. Clean it again. Use strands of copper wire to clear out the passages and assure carb cleaner sprayed through comes out in an even pattern. (wear goggles, those passages will surprise you as to where they come out..) after that, assure you have a good bench sync (search the forum for instructions) and set your mix screws to 3 turns out as a baseline. Also make sure your idle adjust screw is open far enough to let it idle at around 1100rpm.

Yes, valve adjust is .03-.08 millimeters, which roughly equates to .0015-.003 in inches. .004 in. or .005 in. (if that's what you really meant - a lot of times people put an extra 0 in there on a metric measurement as a force of habit) probably isn't going to hurt it too badly, but might make more noise (and allow less breathing) than you'd like.

Your compression #'s are fine.

When you say it won't idle below 3k, does that mean you cannot adjust the idle below 3k or that it dies if you try? ANY air leak is going to be an issue. If you sync'd, make sure your tap screws are back in and snug. If you're running on aux fuel, make sure you've capped the petcock vacuum tap. Either of those could easily cause 3k idling. Intake boots, airbox boots, airbox -> filter box seals, air filter seal: all these are potential places for leaks.

correct .03 -.08 thats waht i meant sorry.
you are corrct it will not idle below 3 grand pretty'choppy' right above that until 4 grand then cleans up sounds good
i cannot imagine the carbs being plug these carbs where dipped before i owned it never ran never had fuel in them ,, i had them redipped and then took them to be sonic cleaned , then i sprayed every passage poked with wire resprayed then put new kit in again ,
it has had new seals put in the intake port and airbox
i have to believe ,unless something else tells me , that the carbs are clean , and i'm still dealing with a vacume leak somewhere in the system
or carb settings?
thanks everyone for youre input it really does help ,
i'll keep working on it , got my petcock rebuild kit today so tommorrow i;ll put it in and set the carbs then take it to 'the man' for syc job??
