A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Handlebar controls

I hope this is the right section for my question. On my gal's 79 750E I'm trying to change the handlebars because the old ones are bent. I got some new ones for it and I got the old ones off, but there are locating holes on the old bars where a tab on the controls on each side mount. The new bars do not have these holes. Can I shave off those tabs on the controls? They look like metal(copper?). Are they a ground for the switches?

If you try to shave off those tabs, the controls will just sit there and spin around the handlebar. Not a good idea if you are trying to hunt for that kill switch in a big hurry.

You'll be fine to drill a new hole into the handlebars; it does get tricky when trying to mark it but it can be done.

Well...oops.

In my my infinite impatience, I shaved them off. Haven't got everything back together yet because I need to put a new clutch cable and choke cable on, but hopefully I can make it work.

Mine are shaved off, and the switches don't rotate. I can rotate them if I want to, but they don't move on their own. A little double-sided tape, or roughing up the bars with a grinder, would hold them better, I bet.

No problem with shaving them off at all.
They will still CLAMP onto the bar.
The locating tabs are so that the people working in production have a reference point to place them. ;)

+1
No need to rough up the finish on the bar either.

It's funny. I went back to my same question last May 2010 and found answers to what I said. Then I ran across Nessism's comment that some bikes have issues with shaving them off and some don't. Wish they'd standardized it.

Cowboy, for piece of mind, you can wrap a strip of electrical tape around the bar if it makes you feel better.
I haven't had to.

Daniel

I feel a little better now hearing the replies. Still don't have it back together though.
