I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hard cold start, low coil voltage

No question here, just some good advice. I had an embarrassing situation yesterday when I tried to sell an 82 650L that didn't want to start with a cold engine. The bike has run absolutely great since I did the valves and carbs last year, but it has occasionally had the coldstart issue. It would crank and crank and crank with no fire, and it didn't seem to need much choke at all. It would eventually come to life but not on all four cylinders at once. I even pulled the carbs again to make sure the choke pick up tubes were absolutely clear, which they were. So after a few quick searchs here, I got wise to checking the voltage at the coils. Sure enough, I had 9.3 V on one of them and 10.1 on the other. An hour later with Deoxit in all of the connectors, and I was at 12.2 V on both coils. I didn't have to touch the E stop switch or the ignition switch. Now it starts as good as it runs, and the choke works exactly as it should. I sold it today for full asking price. Now I need another one. These really are great bikes

As quick as my bike usually starts, it starts even quicker if it's just come off the battery charger.

As old as my battery is (and I don't know how much older than 3 years it is), even if it's been sitting for a few weeks, it sounds like it's spinning the starter at full speed.

But when I start her after charging, I don't even hear the starter spin. I touch the button and it's running. Why exactly is that?

Pretty much the same experience with mine. Kill switch, ignition switch, fusebox and specially the coil supply plugs.

Three words "Coil relay mod"

Last time that I looked there were 3 shaft 650's for sale in southern Maine... If you're willing / able to do the maintenance, good buys can be had. My 650L is running strong at 52000 miles and still gets 50+ mpg.
