A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I seem to be experiencing the same problems as m-nut in a previous fourm, but I'm not sure if our problem is related. I recently added an aftermarket clutch advertised as a perfect fit for my bike from amazon. The original snapped of while ridding (scary). Since adding the new one, I had to slam the shifter to get it into gear on a test ride.

My cousin who's a mechanic suspected it's a worn shifter gear, or if it's not that, he thinks it could be a problem with the transmission (which was fine before).

Clutch cable, gears, or transmission. Which would be the most likely culprit? If anybody has some insight to make it shift properly, it would be much appreciated l, as it's my main source of transportation. It's a 1982 GS650 Shaft drive model.

Aftermarket clutch? You mean the clutch disks or are you talking about the clutch lever?

I'm talking about a clutch lever. I think tkent is right. I was hoping I wouldn't have to tear apart the transmission. Thanks for your imput.

Does either of those gears on the attachment photo look worn to the point they would contribute to the problem?

Those "gears" are just part of the ratchet system. If THEY are worn, you have much much more serious things to worry about.

Although your new lever claims to fit, it might be a little different. If the hole for the cable is closer to the pivot, it will be easier to pull, but may not pull the cable far enough to fully release the clutch. Same thing with adjustment. If there is yoo much slack, you will not fully release the clutch.

For troubleshooting, take the clutch out of the picture. Can you shift without it? How easily? That will help determine whether the problem is in the clutch or the transmission.

.

You'll need about 1/4 inch of slack at clutch lever arm (the thing sticking out of clutch cover) before you feel clutch hand lever start to pull- too much slack ,it won't release well, especially with cold engine.
