  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. O.K.......How in Gods name do I install this airbox?......

I cant seem to get the boots on the box to slip over the carb....do I need new ones?....maybe I'm missin something here but I'm thinking the pods and new jets don't sound as bad as they did last week

I just wanna crank it this weekend and at this rate I dont see it happening...

Any ideas would be a Greaaaaat help

It's supposed to be a pita.

Push harder, wiggle, eventually you'll get it...

Airbox & carb installation is a matter of brute force...
 
Ya, like dave said, force it. They're designed to be really snug, to seal. If you can, get someone to help you. My carbs went in so much easier when I had help than they did when I did it myself. Good luck.
 
When it took me putting my foot on the engine then pulling with all my strength...I knew it was going to be a PITA.

Is there anything I can do to asure that I will only have to take these things off ONCE (to clean and rebuild) because of how difficult they are to install?
 
Go with pods. I want to due to lack of space and a few other reasons, but word is that they are a REAL PITA to jet correctly. I want to ride right now so I'll just suck it up. While you've got them off, replace your intake boot orings. That way you don't have to remove the carbs to check those if you run into other problems. Ummm, that's about all I can think of.

Wiping a thin film of oil inside and outside the boots and then warming them with a heat gun will make them a bit easier to slip into place.

Uh oh I didnt see any o-rings when i took the carbs off....where they supposed to be?.....Im scared now.....are they something that are readily available?..


the heat gun idea sounds like a winner....Ill try that tomorrow evening
Im also going to check with my local hose/rubber dealer (Dixie Rubber...go figger) and see if there happens to be a products out that reconditions old rubber to make it more pliable
 
Stop worrying about the orings. They're hidden. On the engine are the intake boots with I believe two phillips screws holding them on, behind those are the orings. As far as availability, Robert Barr said he had to order his, whereas so far that is the only part that my shop had in stock, it was weird, I asked for a part and they got it for me, no waiting 8O

Where in the world are the philip screws ...o-rings and all that?....
I just (12:41 at night) took a stroll out back to look for them and cant find anything...maybe I dont realize what a intake on a bike is or just blind...Thanks

Ok, I knew just as much as you about this time last year. And now....I know a little bit more than that. I'm not one of the GS Gurus, but hopefully what I'm saying is correct, if not one of the 'rus can correct me I hope. Anyways, check out this link from Robert Barr's site http://www.cycleorings.com/intake.html That's got a black and white pic of the intake boot removed. I'm not positive that they're philips screws, I can saunter down to my bike in 3 seconds if that pic doesn't fix things for you. Hope it does though,
 
thanks for the pic barry but the site says its for a 850....I have a 750E...make any difference?
 
The part number is for an 850. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for yours though. Either way, that's what you're looking for, and your local shop should have the right number for it.

Get some rest. Nothing makes an engine FUBAR faster than tired tinkering unless it's drunk tinkering.

Michael has a point go to bed, I should too as it's 3:30 here. Anyways, I went and grabbed my new orings to check part numbers.
The 850# 09280-38004
My # 09280-40010

So check it out before ou simply order the one's from the 850. Good luck, let us know if you have any other problems.

I went with pods to be rid of that damnable airbox setup.

I wonder if the intake setup is different on the GS's. My biggest PITA removing my carbs is loosening up all 8 clamps. Getting the carbs in the engine intake and the airbox boots on is easy on my 650.

The key is to remove the screws on the air box and slide the airbox back as far as it will go. If you don't do that then its almost impossible to get the carbs in and out. The lube on the boots also helps.

I don't think I need them on my gs but on my DRZ a set of these make it much easier to get the boots over the carbs.

Don't ask me, I still have nightmares over putting that airbox back on! If I change out the pistons and rings I will have to do it again! Agh! Procrastination sure sounds great. 8O
 
Plenty of patience is required for this.
The heat gun is a must.. I used the partners hair dryer (burn it out later)
but it is a great help if the airbox tubes are old and hard.
One problem can be is if the tubes rotate in the box and the orientation is wrong. Worse still if you have taken them out and re-installed in the wrong postion.
Also removing the mounting box screws is a must. Another thing I have found is the airboxes can deform and a flex inwards away from the carbs..
The heatgun and a pushing the box forward with something like a hammer handle inserted through the hole in the back of the box did it for me..
I want to change my air box in the near future when I change carbs so I know what your going through and what I am in for..
