DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just thought i'd pop in here and say hello, new gs550 owner, wanted a smaller capacity older machine after passing my bike test recently, although after 55k miles it has a few problems to sort out, its a 1981 E model

Issues i know of so far?, the indicators and neutral light need fixing, various parts need stripping of rust and paint and repainting or polishing, the clutch feels pretty strange (heavy and slightly spongy, the actuator mechanism seems fine so
hopefully just a cable), the universal front mudguard is terrible, as are the cobbled together coils/leads, the throttle tube is smashed and the tailpiece doesnt fit that well... i think thats it for now, thanks in advance for giving me all the advice i'll probably need, cheers guys.
:rolleyes:s-l16002.jpg

Nice looking bike, I believe I see some Accel spark plug wires, which probably means it has some Accel coils too.

Do motorcycles have to go through MOT like a car?

Hey Monkeypeas!

Welcome and nice little bike you got there. It looks immaculate even with all the flaws you describe. You will get plenty of help here. There's some very active folks from GB here. Hampshire dude is cool. Stick around...lots of fun in store.

Welcome aboard! You might want to take a look at this group if you're on Facebook.... https://www.facebook.com/groups/uksuzukigsowners/

yeah, still have to mot them unless they are 40 years old or over, they are actually "eezestart" plug wires which have been cut and bodged onto the ends of the old leads coming out of the original coils, well, 1 original coil, the other is off something else lol, there is a certain amount of hackery here for me to fix for sure, a few parts including some of the frame has been painted with hammerite and a paint brush, the usual fair, but hey, its good looking from a distance atleast

Hi Monkeypeas and Welcome.
Very tidy machine. Many happy miles and safe arrivals.
Looks like you have a mixture of indicators on there. Any chance the back ones are LEDs and the front filament.
Never underestimate the creativity of Previous Owner.
If I might suggest getting the charging and electrical system in general sorted first.
90% of ' carb trouble' is electrical :)

Hey another Brit!

Welcome. You have a good bike there.

Yes there is plenty to do but who wants to buy a bike that's finished?

Give us a shout if you need anything. There seems to be plenty of 550 parts floating about.

Greetings

Richard

Hia monkeypeas that looks a decent bike as you say there is a bit of work to do that's what winter is for isn't it.
plenty of experienced people to assist here when and if you need it. Great forum.
