Hello!I have a question-probably dumb but....

I just purchased a 1982 GS 850.I am just going to have to start from scratch with the basics of getting it up and running with the normal stuff--carb cleaning,plugs, battery ect.ect.I paid $150.for the bike and I had it in the garage about ten minutes when I decided that it was not worth even trying to fire it on starting fluid(I HATE doing that to ANY motor) just pull the carbs and let them soak.I started pulling the carbs off and when I tried to seperate the carb from the boots on the motor,all 4 boots came with the carbs and the metal body that has the two bolts that hold them to the head stayed on the bike :shock:.I took a shot and I *think* I just screwed up by bidding on a set of carb boots from a '79 GS1100L.Please tell me these will work[-o<.I am not new to GS's,I have owned a 700es and I am really thinking about buying back my GS750T that I sold to my brother in law and he let his father ride it for about 5 month's and parked it and I miss that bike.The only reason I went for this one instead was price and I hate chain drive,I am just so spoiled by shaft drive.I just replaced the chain and sprockets on the 750T before I sold it too....I dont know I think I can own it again for around $600.I just want to ride and I really want the 850 for my daily rider.Will these boots work or should I just forget it because I cant find boots anywhere.I did a quickie clean on the carbs knowing I was going to have to replace the boots and it does run with no noises,it sounded really good.THank You in advance for any help!!!!

Those boots won't work. Sorry. New boots are available from a multitude of on-line factory Suzuki part sources; Bike Bandit, motorgrid, flat out cycle, etc.(do a search) Flat Out is the cheapest but they are pretty slow so beware. I like motorgrid.

Perhaps you've already seen these, but I like to remind all the new members. In addition to the carb rebuild series, I recommend visiting the In The Garage section via the GSR Homepage and check out the Stator Papers. There's also a lot of great information in the Old Q&A section. I have some documentation on my little BikeCliff website to help get you familiar with doing routine maintenance tasks (note that it is 850G-specific but many tasks are common to all GS bikes). Other "user contributed" informational sites include those of Mr. bwringer, Mr. tfb and Mr. robertbarr. And if your bike uses shims for valve adjustments, send an email to Mr. Steve requesting a copy of his Excel spreadsheet that helps you keep track of clearances, shim sizes and other service work.

Every GS850 has (or had) a set of well-known issues that MUST be addressed before you have a solid baseline for further troubleshooting. It's a vintage bike, and it's quite common (as in, every single GS850 I have had contact with) that there are multiple problems that have crept up and slowly gotten worse over the years. It's not like a newer vehicle, where there's generally one problem at a time.

These common issues are:

1. Intake O-rings (install NEW OEM or Viton only - common nitrile O-rings will quickly deteriorate from heat)
2. Intake Boots (install NEW -- these cannot be repaired)
3. Valve clearances (more important than most people think)
4. Carb/airbox boots
5. Airbox sealing
6. Air filter sealing
7. Petcock (install a NEW one)
8. On '79 models, install new points or Dyna electronic ignition (or at least verify that the old points are working correctly)
9. On all models, it's fairly common to have problems with the spark plug caps. These are $3 or $4 each, and often worth replacing if you're keeping the stock coils/wires.
10. Stock exhaust with NO leaks or holes -- good seals at the head and at the junctions underneath.

Z1 tends to have slightly better prices, CRC2 has a wider range of goodies available. If you're near Indy and can bring in an old part to match, CRC2 has a vast inventory of used parts.

The 1100 uses 34mm carbs and your 850 uses 32mm. You can only use eight valve motor carb boots. I do believe the 750 and 850 uses 32mm.

32mm / 34mm BS carbs use the same carb boots, needs to be from an 8V motor 1980 up to 84, the 16V 750s/1100s used clamps on both ends

NO it's way more than just the boots.I t has sat outside for 4 years,and it's hurtin.It is all there and complete and straight but I am not a patient person either(my biggest downfall I admit it).I do need to find an ignition key and a Fuel Tank cap,I already ordered the throttle cable and it's on it's way so it will be all there.Anybody know where I can find a key for it? I pulled the switch today and I found the number 117 on it,is that about right?Thank you all so much I feel better now.BTW the power difference little if any I assume?I will be posting pics when I can so you guys can see how bmuch work is going to be done,.I am mostly upset that the paint while its factory colors are on it are in bad shape.

will 79 1000 boots fit onto an 82 850?

Early 1000 used VM carbs, '82 850 has CV carbs. I doubt they will fit.

I coulda swore that the Ebay ad said 1100 last night. I ASSUMED that if it said 1100 that it was an 80. I have seen 80 1100 shafties. Unless my buddy got the year wrong.
