I am working on getting my 16v head ready for my rebuild. I planned on using grinding compound as the valves didnt look so bad (or so I thought) But, the exhaust valves are quite pitted. So, I asked my local machine shop for a quote on a valve job. They said $250. I understood that would include making all the valves installed height the same. Is that pricey? How far would my $250 bucks go towards my own valve job equipment?

I would look for a shop that specializes in bike engines, there are a few on this forum that will do it right.

Shipping is not that much.

The nearest shop that specializes in bikes is out of town. This is the only shop in town that actually has the equipment to do the work.

Pretty far. You could get a valve seat cutter, micrometer set, valve spring tool, etc for about that much. Then you have to learn how to do it right. And what would you do with the tools afterwards?

Go here for comparison

You may find someone closer to home. It helps to put your location in your signature, as you may be anywhere in the world

Are the valves pitted or the seats? Valves are easy enough to replace.

One valve is pitted to the point where it may not be too good to grind it out. One of the seats has a pit in it. I havent had to lap valves so much to get a good seat, and I dont know how much is too much.
BTW, I am in Victoria BC, as it shows on my postings.

I can do it for 225.00 + parts + return shipping & that will be a radiused valve job (better than 3 angle) & the head cleaned & boxed to ship back. I will need 1 GOOD intake valve & 1 GOOD exhaust valve. Turn around from when I get it to when it leaves about 5-7 days. If you send me ALL the parts I'll reassemble also, including lapping valves, for 300. Let me know if you're interested. Ray.

Generally, I would rather order online than call long distance to place an order, but i called APE over a month ago to order a piston kit, gave my credit card number and everything and it seemed like it went well. Then they couldnt confirm my address through their incompetence or outdated equipment, so I had to scan my drivers license, visa statement and card and email it to them. They then had cancelled my original order and I had to wait for the money to be put back on the card, another week. They wouldnt email me the tracking number, so I had to call several times to get it(long distance), no toll-free. So, it took about 6 weeks to get here and i had to pay UPS another $140 when it arrived. If a company sends packages properly, there is no need to have to pay anthing but GST @6% or so. Now, I just can't wait to get the phone bill to see how much more its gonna cost me. Besides that when I asked tech questions, they didnt seem to know what they were talking about.
One long frustrating experience, waste of money and time.

Big Jay is the owner and I bet he would like to make your bad deal right.

sounds like they protected you from a credit card skimming attempt.

you have to be retarded to talk smack about APE
You dont know what you are talking about, you are some kind of ignoramus.
I order from Bike Bandit quite a bit, and the shipping takes 2-3 days max, and NOTHING owing when UPS comes to the door. They have toll-free and NEVER a problem with my cc.

On a 16 valve they are, no 8 valve aftermarkets exist anymore (Vesrah used to make them, but not anymore) so replacement valves for an 8 valve are about 45 bucks each.

These heads and valves require special care....I have left you a private message.
I also live in Victoria and have had many Suzukis, including 3 1100's.

Don't know experts when insulting one.

thx gearhead - got the P.M.- you showed me almost how to spell "fun" but you did say you were only giving me 2 letters.

on second thought . you might want to deal with a flashy car machinist. they might even have up-front pricing. like looking for MR. Good Wrench

that'd be a good movie..

plenty of 8 valve (valves) available.
45 bucks a pop is almost titanium price.
valves should be able to be found for 20ish each(stainless)
or i have used 1000 valves for 10 each:)

I am delivering my engine kit to nanaimo for rebuild next week....I could take your head to the same (motorcycle performance) shop for rebuild. Monte
